Jeff Van Gundy is going nowhere. Les is not the type of owners who will throw lots of money away just to get the job done.

Plus there are not many good coaches out there, especially championship caliber coaches. Les missed a golden opportunity to sign Phil Jackson. If he fires JVG, who he gonna use?

I'm beginning to wonder if we will do better than 6-11. I do believe at the end of the year we will be a better team than we were last year.

Since this appears to be the new "Fire Van Gundy" Thread I've so far been avoiding it to give JVG the benefit of the doubt but his comments in today's Chron really got to me:

What really PO's me about this is that this is JVG's team, his strategy and these are his players. As a coach who's been in the NBA for years couldn't he have figured out ahead of time that players in the 30's get injured and that with the speed of NBA players on both D and O that older players are at a disadvantage in getting open for jump shots or rotating on D? Of course lateral quickness is crucial but just because a guy in his mid thirties could do it a year ago doesn't mean that they can do it now especially over the course of an 82 game season.

I understand JVG likes older players who don't make as many boneheaded plays but at the same time you need to count on the possibilities of injury and the inability of older players to perform like they used to on a consistent basis. On top of that pure shooters often go through slumps and even stars get injured and it seems to me like JVG didn't plan for that but just expected Yao and T-Mac to create consistently and John Barry and David Wesley to shoot consistently not counting that if something went wrong with either the stars or shooters that the whole system breaks down. Now we've got both stars and shooters not playing up to potential because of injury with no one else capable of creating on the dribble to shake up the O.

    Nope.

Courtesty of that extension, he has roughly seventeen months, seven days, twelve hours, seventeen minutes, and a handful of seconds left...

    ;)

Perhaps he might coax better performances from his players not named Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming if Mr. Van Gundy showed a little faith in them to the media and the public.

He'll be around longer after the Rockets give him another extension.

Then again, things could collapse completely, Texans-style, and Le$ would have to eat that extra year to keep some semblance of a fan base intact.

Tim Breaux has something to say...and as usual...it's important...listen here...

JVG is calling it like he's seeing it...Isn't that what you sometimesy fans want? You post your negative comments all of the time and you chat back and forth about someone getting your hater mail to the players. JVG has messages of his own...and they ain't always flowers and puppy dogs...

Look here...your coach is doin it! He expects more...Don't you? He wants more...Don't you? There ain't a damn thing wrong with what he said...That's what the man is bein paid to do. Let him spin it.

EDC you are funny...He gets tough and you wanna say something. I suppose you would be happy if he was strokin their backs and smoochin up...but even then I'm sure you wouldn't be able to keep your fingers off the keyboard...I like you though...the world needs people like you...!

Rudy took the heat from you guys for being too easy going...JVG is taking the heat for calling out bad performance...expecting more...challenging our fellas to give more...want more and BE more...He knows they will come around...but there ain't nothing wrong with JVG asking them to concentrate a little harder and work a little smarter...so they can come around quicker.

Ain't a damn thing wrong with that.

Tim Breaux has spoken...now I'm gonna sit down...and contemplate. All is well in Rocketland.

"All is well" only for those who enjoy 0.300 basketball, being 5.5 games out of the division, and being among the last in the league.

The last thing I want to do is give Mr. Van Gundy any pleasure. He is like that mean old man who keeps things when they land in his yard.

"Mr. Van Gundy, can we please see the Rockets score 100 points?
    Pretty Please, Mr. Van Gundy?"

It is funny, isn't it? As far as I know, I think it is safe to say this is the team JVG assembled. He asked what kind of players he needed and CD acquired them for him. In just three years, the Rox becomes the oldest, slowest team in the NBA, the home of ex-Knicks. Now he complains those old players don't have the drive, energy and they are too slow and can't make their shots, blah, blah. Excuses!

I am not denying he is a good coach, but like all teams he managed, he is good but not great. His system is flawed, especially on the offense end. He is not a championship caliber coach, period.

The thing that most disturbed this article is Feigan characterizing JVG's quotes as "the time for patience is running out". I agree with you that with the exception of Yao this is pretty much a JVG-approved team, and if he's tring to determine if lateral quickness is a function of old age or lack of effort we're in a lot more trouble than I thought.

Because what to we do? How can we even trade anyone who's JVG's worried about, given those comments? JVG can bench guys, but who replaces them and how?

I'm surprised this doesn't have it's own thread. Many here have legitamate criticisms of JVG's use of Yao and I regret edc soming in here to ruin any possible hope of discussion, because this article really wrenched my stomach far more than our 3-7 record has.

    Perfect example of JVG.
