Must piss his wife off when she's nagging him and he just turns his left ear to her.

You live as a team, you die as a team.
Only die-hard fans will purposely go through the same pain as the players.......

which means everyone here has back problems too :D ;)

on the 2k8 short bio of yao, it says at the age of 8, the doctor gave him the wrong medicine for his kidneys, which made his left ear lose most of his hearing.

Recent studies have shown that second hand smoke can drastically increase a childs risk for ear infections. My parents smoked around 2 packs a day combined.

I'm by no means an ear, nose, throat surgeon but i'll share what i know anyways.

Depends on whether Yao suffers from conduction deafness or nerve deafness.

What you guys just described is conduction deafness. Recurrent ear infections (otitis media) often leads to a perforation of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) leading to hearing loss (60 or 70& - off the top of my head).

The tympanic membrane or cochlear bones (which help pass on the sound) can be reconstructed.

BUt if you have damage to your auditory nerve that is much harder to be corrected (ie: can't correct with a hearing aid etc). The problem is, the sound is being picked up by your ear fine but it can't be transferred to your brain - hence no sound.

what about a cochlear implant? with human organs all over the place in china, and him having $$$, shouldnt be too hard to find a match.

For the cochlear implant to work, he would need an intact auditory nerve. It may just be that the function of Yaos left ear is not as bad as we say and he just doesn't require one.

You guys have to remember that a cochlear implant will give you FAR from perfect hearing. If he can hear decently enough out of the ear then leave well enough alone.

Can Yao use some hearing aids? I would assume his hearing problem affects his on court performance. Maybe his rebounding would be up if he could hear the ball hit the rim.

I had my left ear sewn back on after a car wreck in '90.

Before that, had several eardrum lancings in both ears, and tubes. My left eardrum burst at least three times over the years... but only once past age 13. I was 28. It still hurt like a big dog... if you know what I mean.

I also have a touch of tinnitus in my left ear.

    What?

So Yao doesn't have 60% of his hearing in one ear. Each % roughly equates to a decibel meaning in order for it to sound like both ears are each hearing the same volume, the sound in Yao's bad ear would need to be 60 decibels louder than the sound in his good ear.

If you listen to two sounds 10 decibels apart in volume, you perceive the louder sound to be twice as loud. If the difference is 20 decibels, you perceive it to be 4 times as loud. 30 decibels, 8 times as loud.

At this rate, Yao probably perceives his good ear as hearing things 64 times louder in his good ear than in his bad ear! He probably feels like he's virtually deaf in one ear.

I have lost only 5% of my hearing in my right ear but it feels like I've lost 25-30%.

I'd think with the money he makes he'd have long considered it.

For the people who have had issues with their ears, does it affect your coordination and balance any?
