It should work right out of the box (unless they're flash, in which case it would tell you that you should install the plugin). Does it affect IE too, or just firefox?

Googled a few things and this might help:
If you have ZoneAlarm installed, apparently that might sometimes stop animated gifs from working properly.

If it only happens in firefox, check out your about:config page -- go to your URL bar at the top and enter about:config and hit enter. Then inside of the filter section at the top, type image.animation_mode and hit enter. It should ahve filtered out all the other selections and just left you with this one. Check what the Value is there -- if it's anything other than "normal", double-click it and type normal in the pop-up.

Let us know if this fixes anything. There are a ton of awesome Computer folks (like Rockets2K) on here, and I'm sure someone will get it figured out.

im not much more than a luddite when it comes to this stuff, but based on what ive heard/read im going to avoid vista.

im getting a new pc this week, but sticking with xp pro - why change from something that has worked fine for me. i do alot of home recording and im worried that some of the software i use wont work w/ vista. plus my printer, scanner, monitor, ect.

but if you are going to get vista, ive heard it is best to wait till after the first service pack comes out, which wont be till the fall.

dell recently started offering xp again, due to overwhelming customer requests.

Just curious, I don't remember previous MS Windows releases being this poorly received? Maybe ME?

ME didnt require such a big jump in power to run.
It was basically 98SE + some minor additions

XP can be run on 512M comfortably, while Vista really requires at least 1.5G to run smoothly.

Also, drivers that worked on 98SE would work with ME for the most part, while Vista just about requires entirely new drivers from XP.

There doesnt seem to be the demand since I dont think alot of average users want to have to upgrade everything they have to run Vista.

Mainly OEM and the power users who stay near the bleeding edge of tech are using it.

so is there anything i would be missing out on by not getting vista and just getting xp again on a new computer? or some reason i would regret not having it in a year or two, even though xp is fine now? i assume the biggest reason demand is low is because most people, like me, really like xp. not that i do much other than surf the internet, but i've never really had any problems with it at all. it never crashes, and when i first got it, i could basically leave the computer on forever with no slow down.

but after 3.5 years, it does run slower now and can slow down significantly after a few days so i'd kind of like a new computer. i don't have to have one and getting everything onto the new one will be a pain, but i don't know if i want to wait until the fall for a vista service pack. so is xp any part of the reason it's slower now, or is that all in the specs like processor and memory. in other words, assuming i get a fairly powerful computer, will xp be holding it back and i'll notice a slow down in 1.5 years instead of 3.5, or is the OS fairly irrelevant?

This is a serious red flag up the pole. I can remember running 64M and W98SE. The only time I needed more RAM was when I ran Office (poster child for bloatware). 512M was a big jump for XP, but the base OS changed to the business NT4 base, so I figured more was need for industrial strength.

I can't even begin to guess why 3x is needed for Vista. Maybe the dual core CPUs needed 2x RAM, which is sad if true.

well, to be fair, I dont think that is the "recommended" amounts, that is what I had on my laptop when I got it and it worked ok, but in order to run some of the things I run on here I cranked it up to 2G.

The reason for the increase in RAM needed is mainly for the fancy visual features

If you are willing to turnoff some of the stuff, you can run it with less...but at that point, just stick with XP...Im not getting rid of XP totally, Ill still run it on the wifes and kids machines and on my testbench machine....but on my main box and laptop, Ill run Vista.

I use it with no issues. Then again, I am a basic, BASIC computer user...so all I'm doing is backing up CD's, uploading pics, using the net, Word and Excel.

Oh, it keeps telling me that some driver is blocked whenever I boot up, and my DVD shrink won't work.
