Oh yeah, and Weird Al got shafted out of his grammy award, so no, the Grammys did NOT get it right...
IM-ever so-HO: The Red Hot Chili Peppers died when Hillel Slovak died in 1988. After that, they went completely mainstream, and I haven't liked their music since. Hillel Slovak Discuss amongst yaselves....
Mother's Milk was mainstream? After that, their music may have very well been mainstream......but only because they got big enough to make it so. That being said, their performace last night was VERY uninspired.
I agree to a point. I do like Frusciante's playing, although not as much as Hillel's (obviously). Personally, I liked everything up to Sex Magic. I even liked about half the tunes on that album, but I think the success of Under The Bridge was the beginning of the end. When Anthony started singing instead of rapping....the real RHCP's were gone forever IMO. I understand that it's natural for bands that stay together for a long time to evolve, and I totally respect that....but that doesn't mean I have to like it. It's sad that so many so-called RHCP fans have probably never even heard of Hillel Slovak.
They problem with Chili Peppers now is that all of their songs are so formulamatic. Each one starts off a little funky then it goes into a poppy little sing along type of thing. Too bad they didn't go something like the Funkadelic route. They could have done so much more. I saw them last fall in New Orleans at the Voodoo Fest. The best part of the show is when they did a long jam with The Meters. The crowd was really into it and looked like they were actually having fun. Then they went back into their same tired pop crap. What a waste.
I agree with you. If they would have gone more the way of Freaky Styley, they could have been legendary, IMHO. They used to worship the Meters, so I can imagine that jam would have been great to see.
Here is a little clip. It cuts off right when it gets good. (They all took turns soloing etc). I was with a bunch of 23 year olds (little bros bachelor party) who didn't know who the Meters were so I didn't go see them on the small stage. But this made it worth it for me. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HqMfuiy0eO8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HqMfuiy0eO8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> I do think that Flea and Frusciante could make some incredible music together. I would like to see them do something like "One Nation Under a Groove"
I thought it was a great show solely for the fact The Police were back together, but I wanted to see them more than once.. I liked the idea that they played Roxanne, but if I were in charge I would have had them play Next To You or So Lonely.. Having the Police play only one song wet my appetite just enough to spend the crazy amount of money the tickets are going to go for.. Anyone find a video of the performance from last night on the net yet?
Last night, they kept saying "stay tuned for an unforgettable performance by the RHCP's" so I kept watching. When they finally played, the only thing they did was drop a bunch of confetti..... When they finished, Anthony yelled something about Sex Machine and for a minute, I thought they would whip into a James Brown tune or something because of his death this year....but they didn't..... So, uh....was the confetti the "unforgettable" part? WTF???
Yeah, the chilly peppers sucked ass. Wrong song. They should have played that bluesy song on the record or something. Also, I thought the dixie chick's performance was great. Some may not agree with the politics, but I don't see how you can't agree with the musicianship and artistry. Plus, it isn't like the chicks recorded the song to go mainstream. They are making a bold stand and it was a risk because country radio doesn't even play the song. In fact, I can't remember the last time I actually heard any dixie chicks song on the radio.
BTW, did anyone else catch that REALLY WEIRD moment between Don Henley and Scarlet Johannson? Don: So you're recording your first album, huh? Scarlett: Yes, do you have any advice for me? Don: No. [long awkward silence] WTF was that??
Don: So you're recording your first album, huh? Scarlett: Yes, do you have any advice for me? Don: Show Don Henley your t*tties! [long awkward silence] That would have been better.
Mayer actually went to Berkley in Boston as a guitarist. He has serious chops. Actually, I disagree with you on Mary J. She's one of the few singers that I hear not embellishing every damn note (i.e. Xtina). She knows how to carry off a melody and she does have a phenomenal voice. Also, keep in mind that r&b singers have ALWAYS done that. The good one's like Blige are allowed. I liked the Barkely record. That one song was a massive hit. I really don't think people will forget the song. Now, if they don't do anything relevant after this, you're probably right about the band. But, I think Crazy will be around for a while. It's a good song.
They actually laughed after the pause. That was supposed to be a joke. A Grammy writer was probably being beaten with bamboo shoots after that misfire.
