Hey, HoustonForever, Andrei's nickname is AK-47 because his jersey # just happens to be 47, and he's from Russia. I don't think the Kirk Hinrich thing would work quite as well...

Great defender, but too much of a boy scout in interviews.

    It really bugs

AK47 is playing well now, but it won't last. He is jumping around like a jackrabbit on caffeine, which means he is just begging for a serious injury.

Yup, to avoid injury, players would minimize their jumping in the game. In fact, sitting on wheelchairs on the court will almost guarantee long and hall of fame careers. Michael Jordan and Bill Russell never jumped anyway in their respective careers.

From what I recall of the story, Kirilenko's nickname derived from his initials, initially in his rookie year. Everybody started calling him "AK" and that turned into "AK-47". Andrei then picked "47" as his number because of this... it fits so nicely, his initials, his jersey number and the actual weapon was developed by a Russian.

Sarcasm noted. A few people lucked out, including Dr. J and the people you mentioned, but the force is on my side. The force of history: the line of hyperactive jumpers who have limped out of the game is far, far longer than the line of lucky players. Have you forgotten Ralph Sampson already? How long did Grant Hill last at the peak of his powers? How about David Thompson (though drugs were also a factor here)?

AK47 needs to be careful. He gets most of his blocks from the weak side, so he will frequently bounce off people at awkward angles. That's a recipe for serious injury.

Ralph Sampson's leaping ability isn't what caused his knees to fail.

I think Kinko will have his good nights and off nights.

Btw - Thanks for posting the entire conversation in 1 paragraph. I have a very short attentionspan and might have drifted off if I saw a line break.

Sampson was quite a leaper for his size. He was also very active on the court, and that was probably his downfall.

Kirilenko is worse both ways: he (1) really likes to use his vertical (2) way too often. Unless he becomes a lot more careful, I predict a short and painful career for him.

But sampson had a slight lower body. Haven't payed attention to AK-47's base to see if he should be able to take the repeated impacts.

Again, his leaping ability was not his downfall. You are incorrect.

Sampson had a nasty fall at Boston Gardon back in 86/87ish and ended up hurting his back. His back injury, although he played through it, caused him to run differently, which in turn, started all his knee problems.

What are you talking about. He's russian, they will just inject him with drugs and he will destroy the competition until he runs into Yao who will BREAK HIM. ;)

My memories of Sampson are growing dim, but my guess is that at 205 lbs, AK-47 probably won't be much more durable than Sampson was.

    Two things:

First of all, I doubt that running was solely to blame for Sampson's knee injuries. All that jumping he did post-back-injury couldn't have helped him to stay healthy.

Second, why did Sampson fall against the Celtics in the first place? If he had played with less abandon, he might have avoided the injury. But no, he had to be Superman. Likewise, AK47's similarly risky play will catch up with him one of these days.
