He's out of the 8 man rotation and the #3 PF for now. As long as he's got a mental block in terms of finishing around the rim, you can't keep him out there, and I think he understands that. This takes some pressure off him, and allows him a small opportunity each game to go out there and try and find himself again. Evan
Scola and Yao. If the Rockets get into a situation where they can sub Hayes on defense and play Scola on offense, I would do that.
Hayes in my mind still has an important role as the fourth big man. I am very happy with Scola, Landry, and Hayes as the PFs and backup Cs. I see Hayes only be used situationally (but generally important situations) unless Scola or Landry regresses.
At the end of close game where there are time outs every time. There are also certain situations where you are facing another Chuck Hayes type player on the other team then you can play him more. He will be a situational player which is what he is.
So you think Hayes will get to a level where he is winning DPOY and rebounding titles? Plus Wallace could at least dunk the ball when he was wide open, and not miss point blank lay-ups.
well hayes earns less than 10% than what wallace is earning.... so u cant expect them to do the same things.
Come playoffs this will be awesome if we have all three to work on matchups...Hayes cuts well and plays the sweet D and brings hustle...Scola brings hustle too but gets a bit greedy under the basket when Yaos open Hayes knows better and passes it
Exactly.... I will take a good offensive player who is average on defense over an elite defender who sucks on offense. Which is EXACTLY what we have in the Hayes vs Landry/Scola issue. DD
Chuck isn't going anywhere. 1. It's good to have him for defense, either for one play like with Durant or for a stretch, when you need him. We don't get to play a Cleveland team without Varejao and Gooden every night... we need to stop a Jamison or Duncan sometimes. There are, frankly, also times when the matchups are such that the Rockets are better off sitting Yao for a few minutes and have Hayes at the C, just to change the momentum when Yao is getting killed having to guard a much quicker guy or in pick-n-rolls. 2. He doesn't make too much money, so no monetary reason to try and dump salary even if he gets 8-10 mpg. Who are you going to realistically pick up with the roster spot and $1.4-$1.8 mil a year that's more useful than Chuck? 3. You need insurance in case of injury. Preferably, your 9th, 10th guy who play possibly signficant minutes in case of injury can, you know, actually play.
I don't see how he won't get substantial minutes if we make the playoffs. Who is going to guard Boozer, Amare and Duncan? Scola? LOL Landry? not unless we want them to score 40 I like all the offense we are getting from PF right now but when a real, dominant big man shows up Chuck is the only who can contain them. The thought of all 3 guys on the floor at once does seem pretty awesome.
No, I was just telling the other guy being a defensive stopper can get you a 60 mill contract. But Chuck Hayes isn't a defensive stopper like Ben was back before he signed that fat contract so it's a moot point. He's a great interior defender, but defensive stopper is a bit stretching it.
Our lack of quality PFs over the years have caused a lot of people to overrate Chuck Look, he's fine for a little spurt here and there. Don't expect him to play more than 5-6 minutes a game, unless Scola/Landry are in foul trouble or they're getting LIT up by some big man on the other team. The man has trouble making layups for gods sake...
I can tell you FOR SURE that Scola guards Boozer better than anyone on the Rockets team, main offense for Scola is the Pick n Roll and same goes for Boozer, Scola is a great PNR defender. As for Duncan, I remember Scola to play well against him when we played the spurs without TMac. You can argue about Amare all you want, but given Amare sub par defense, i prefer that when Yao is not there Scola can post him up and get him in foul trouble (the easiest way to slow down Amare).
I love seeing threads like this because it points out one of the things I like about Coach Adelman. As the players have become more comfortable with his system and the rookies have improved tremendously, he hasn't hesitated to put them into situations where they can thrive, get confidence, and earn ever more minutes. Our last coach, IMO, simply wouldn't do that. Sure, he'd play a rookie if he had no choice, but only if he had no choice. We're lucky to have this guy coaching the Rocks. Funny how the board was littered with "Adelman Sucks" threads not long ago. Fickle fans... where are they now? Coach Adelman didn't get his record by not knowing what he's doing. Many of us have wondered when Hayes would start coming off the bench, his natural role and one he'll do well. When? When Scola and Landry, a big surprise, were ready for Showtime. They're ready.
