I don't think i agree with the cart / nocart distinction. If walking the course is what makes it a sport, then doesn't that make walking the sport? If it's carrying a bag...then I guess those with caddy's aren't athletes...sorry tiger!
Of course its a sport...It's not like we're talking about Poker or Bass Fishing or Nathans' annual hot dog eating contest... I'm sure you've guys at least tried to play golf and know from experience how difficult it is to concentrate and play lights out all weeekend long...Look at Tiger...
Coimpetitive Golf requires remarkable physical and mental skills, not extreme exertion. Maintaining the delicate balance of physical and mental performance while walking about 30 miles over 4 days in the sun definitely constitues 'sport'.
WALKING !!!! WALKING !!! LOL - come on Cohen....we talkin bout WALKIN !!! And they are not even carrying their own bag..... Golf, IMHO, is a game of skill, but not a sport. DD
Ever try walking on your hands? Does it exert your arm muscles a bit? You largest muscles are in your legs so walking seems easy up to a point, but that does not diminish the fact that those muscles are moving 200 pounds 30 miles. That requires a lot of energy, and if that's all there was to it...walking 30 miles... not a big deal. But when trying to maintain peak performance of a golf swing, it adds to the challenge. You and others who do not consider golf a sport appear to believe that physical exertion is a requirement to qualify something as a sport but it appears that definitions of sport are not consistent with you interpretation. But you're entitled to your opinion ... even if incorrrect.
Stop making your own definition for the word "Sport". As I have mentioned earlier.. go look up the definition in any dictionary, and see if Golf meet the criteria. So Baseball becomes just a "game" when DH get on the plate?
Remove those stupid carts and the inability to curse at your buddy while he's trying to swing or putt or drive the ball or approach the tee or concentrate on anything (or whatever the f*ck any of that sh*t is called) and we have a sport.
I agree . . . it is a game. . a competition but not a sport Rocket River not all competitions . .or all games. . are sports
Turning Left is not a Sport -J Rome I'm a Nascar guy - J Rome I agree with the formet. . the latter is J Rome being J Rome Rocket River
Cohen is right here... but go further. Throw in a practice round on Tuesday and a pro-am on Wednesday and these guys are making that walk up and down hills (lots of the time in heat) six times a week and 30+ weeks a year, I would guess. Don't mistake the monthly golf game you play (including cart and beer and mulligans) with the one the pros play. Oh yeah, don't forget how much these guys and gals practice, too.
Anything that you can play by yourself is not a sport. It may be a skill or a game or a challenge, but sports require head-to-head competition. To me, chess is more of a sport than golf because you're facing someone who is reacting to what you do, and you in turn react to his moves. In golf, you try to shoot for the best score, regardless of what the other players are doing. I would say that defense is the essence of sport - either playing defense yourself or overcoming it. If you say that golf is a sport, I think you'd have to say the same about the Home Run Derby.
Damn dude. What did golf ever do to you? Were you raped by a 9-iron? And whoever said that bowling takes more physical exertion than golf, that's laughable. BTW, Swoly-D, when you go bowling, do you bowl at the same time as the person in the lanes directly next to you? Do you get at pool on television when the crowd is quiet while people are shooting? What about gymnastics, should the crowd at the Olympics try to distract the girl on the balance beam?
To me? Nothing personal. But golf clubs have had a long tradition of excluding minorities, Jews, and women - much longer than other American institutions. Doesn't Augusta still exclude women? Golf is last refuge of the good ol' boys network, so I think it deserve a bit of scorn as such.
