Just delusional ... Democrats are dying for Trump to get the nomination either as a Republican or 3rd party. Him getting a nomination almost ensures a victory for the Democrats. He is a clown.

I wouldn't underestimate the ego of Trump. I think he is serious in his mind but doesn't believe he needs to do anything more than he is doing for now.

This is sort of where I stand, but there is a key difference between the Dems and GOP here. Unless they've changed it, the GOP is much more winner-take-all in their primaries. As a result, the small states actually matter much less, because if you win Texas by 1%, for example, losing all the small states is irrelevant, no matter any of the margins. In the Dem primaries, margins matter, so winning Montana by a large margin can offset losing Pennsylvania in a close race.

So Trump probably loses Iowa, but if he can win New Hampshire over Bush/Walker, he actually would come out of that OK and be in a pretty strong position.

But a big part of me wonders if Trump was doing this for fun and didn't mean to become this popular, and is now just trying to get more and more outlandish in the hopes that the voters turn on him - but is continually surprised that it's not working. I thought the attack on McCain fit that and now the attack on Kelly. It seems like he's thinking "what do I have to say to get people to hate me?"

To expand on the above - in 2008, if the Dems use the GOP system, Hillary wins by the nomination by a wide margin. Similarly, in 2008 and 2012, if the GOP uses the Dem system, neither McCain nor Romney are able to run away from the pack and it would have been a wide open mess.

I think he may have been hurt with the women if he wasn't already hurt with that demographic before for constantly having young hot chicks.

I don't think he set out to attack either McCain or Kelly. McCain he just took a poke fun at stance, with Kelly he got defensive and reactive.

I agree that I don't think he figured he'd be this strong at this stage. But the guy loves the spotlight, there's no doubt about that, and I think he will take it so long as that spotlight remains on him.

What happens when his shtick wears thin and voters start looking for substance - I think that's when his polls numbers drop and he fades away. That said, there have been others before him without a platform that have carried things pretty far.

From what I've heard is that the GOP has changed up their nomination system so that it is closer to the Dems.
