I hated it from the time it was rumored they wanted him in FA. the price is fine, maybe a little too high, but the length of that contract is crazy. he should've been on a 2 year deal just to hold the spot for sengun. 1 year as a starter, second year off the bench, then get out of the way. I don't think he's tradable this year. not at this price and not with this many years left. i think next year he comes off the bench behind sengun. year 3 he'll be out of the rotation completely as I expect garuba to be our backup center. I don't think we will ever be able to trade his contract without giving up draft capital. may in the summer of 2023 we can attach the bucks pick and clear additional cap space. too bad.
I really hope Stone doesn't have these random 'WTF' additions per year. Last year Oladipo and this year Theis. He's a nice back up big but I feel he's nothing more than that. I don't know how moveable he is but I guess it's not impossible to move.
Theis would look a lot better in a more defined role. He has way to much freedom so his effectiveness is down. I don’t know what was promised to him but his time is ticking as a Rocket.
We wait until deadline. Some team will be desperate enough for a big and a 3pt shooter and hopefully a pg like wall. He's paid like 8-9 mil.. that's chump change these days. I think Jalen Green as a rookie is getting paid almost the same amount.
I think it’s an appropriate contract I don’t think we will be able to trade him though bc we have Alpi who will cut in to his minutes and stats so he won’t be able to be “showcased”, he will have poor numbers the whole time he’s in Houston which is likely going to draw zero interest from other teams. Just my thoughts
I said from Day 1 we needed to re-sign Olynyk and every one called me idiot. That lineup with Olynyk clearly showed some flashes and I thought Olynyk really elevated all of our young guys' play. At least Theis' contract is only 8M per year so we can still recover from that but Rafael Stone should be on the hot seat as well. He gambled on Wall, Oladipo and Theis and all of his gambles backfired.
He would be a very good backup on a contender. Most contenders have starting Cs in place so his value would be highest if one of them went down. Also his contract isn’t bad- ibaka makes basically the same amount right now at a way later stage in his career.
https://bbs.clutchfans.net/threads/why-did-we-sign-theis.312680/ I thought this was an awful signing as seen above. Should've never been signed. So many Cs teams are trying to offload. Should've put them into our cap space and got future assets as compensation. Memphis / OKC doing it better. And they have better teams.
I don’t think Theis should be the one to go (Wood should have already been moved on draft day). Theis plays solid basketball and play NEXT to Sengun.
I just don’t understand the length of the contract. I mean were they thinking they draft any bigs in the next two drafts that they actually might want to play? A two year deal with the second year having options so you can move him… fine. Veteran bigs are the biggest bargain right now in the NBA. The Sixers got Drummond for a bag of peanuts. McGee looks like Wilt this this year for the Suns. The Rockets might need to overspend on a real PG and wings in the summer of 23 though. Why have money tied up on someone you could replace with a vet min contract? Not a fireable offense for Stone but definitely will be on a list that, if it grows, could collectively be reasons to move onto a better GM.
when signed, I looked at it as a good player to help our young bugs grow into the NBA and their roles. Also, as a very movable contract. I’ve watched DT for several years and believe he’s a good piece in the right place. I do believe it’ll have to be the right situation i e team/injury etc to claim a decent return. I do not think he’ll start Year II with TheGoodGuys.
He had his moments with the Celtics but you give a lengthy contract to a 6'8 ish Center. God, I hate those undersized guys, especially here after Morey is gone. What do McGee and Drummond have in common, 7fters......do not even have to be smart about it.
DT is a decent back up center. His contract is no big deal and they will be able to move it somewhere down the line. I think Gordon is the only one that gets moved this year and it will be for a second round pick and an expiring contract. Maybe Rubio with Sexton going down. I don’t think the Rockets will move Wood for what they would get back. I don’t see too many teams that look desperate this year.
Negative contracts are: House, Theis, Wall, Augustin and Nwaba. So not only is is not a positive contract, it's not even a neutral trade filler contract. House is expiring. Augustin and Nwaba (please stop shooting 3s) will probably just ride out their contracts. Hopefully Wall finds a new home next year but I won't be surprised either if that doesn't happen. But Theis? I think we're stuck with him unless we attach 1 or more Nets' picks.
