From NBATalk: Pacers about to run the table. According to the Indy Star News, Croshere expected to resign today, as will rest of team of FA's. Take that Orlando. The Indiana Pacers are the defending EC champs and they're going to hang around another year to defend that title as Austin Croshere is expected to lead a wave of resignings. Croshere is expected to get a deal starting at $7M a year, as Jalen Rose will get the MAX, Reggie Miller, Mark Jackson and even Sam Perkins are expected to get standard raises. 'I still feel confident we'll be in position to bring everybody back,' Pacers general manager David Kahn said. And the latest has them trying to use their $4.5 million trade exception to land Clippers forward Maurice Taylor. I like Croshere and all, but isn't $7 million (to start) a little steep? I was thinking $4 million. ------------------ Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
Croshere to get 51 million over 7 years --------------------------------------------- Croshere staying with Pacers http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2000/0801/663195.html ESPN.com news services INDIANAPOLIS -- The Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers locked up a key piece of their future plans by agreeing to a seven-year deal with free-agent forward Austin Croshere, ESPN's David Aldridge reported Tuesday. Croshere Croshere, who reportedly had been pursued by the Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors, will make earn more than $51 million over the seven seasons. Indiana has four free-agent starters -- Jalen Rose, Reggie Miller, Rik Smits and Mark Jackson. All are expected to re-sign, with Rose reportedly getting the maximum allowable salary -- about $9.2 million to $9.6 million for next season -- under terms of the collective bargaining agreement. According to the Indianapolis Star, Croshere was in Chicago on Saturday before flying to Indianapolis to continue negotiations with the Pacers. Croshere, 25, averaged 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, 15 points in the NBA Finals. ------------------ President of the Rockets/Raiders Fan Club
Well, they did it - Croshere gets $51M over 7 years. http://www.espn.go.com/nba/news/2000/0801/663195.html (beat to the punch by moestavern) ------------------ [This message has been edited by ChrisP (edited August 01, 2000).]
Is Croshere worth $7million? Regular Season Notes: 10.3PPG 1.1APG 6.4RPG .441 FG% [*]Started only 14 games 1st Round Notes: 7.0PPG 1.2APG 5.6RPG .371 FG% [*].371% against a Bucks team that doesn't attempt to play defense. Marvelous. 2nd Round Notes: 8.0PPG 1.2APG 3.3RPG .366 FG% [*]% actually goes down after first series...is it possible to go any lower than .371?!? Conference Finals Notes: 7.0PPG 0.2APG 4.2RPG .364 FG% NBA Finals Notes: 15.2PPG 0.8APG 6.0RPG .545 FG% [*]Finally breaks out with offensive production...all against pathetic Laker forward defense. [*]A defensive liability: Too small to bang with power forwards, and too slow to chase small forwards. Is Croshere worth $7mill? You be the judge. I like him, too. Just not $7M/year. That's a BIG jump from his original $4M/3year deal. Especially after lookin' at the stats posted by thacabbage. Man, I just keeping asking myself - what's wrong with this picture? ------------------ GATER
You guys will see. The finals was his coming out party. I don't know where this too slow crap started but it is wrong. How many times did he blow by Horry in the finals? On defense he plays sound fundamental D by moving his feet. He doesn't reach for the ball (which is how most players nowadays play D) I agree, 7mil. is too much right now, but in the "big picture" there is no way the pacers could let him get away. ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts"
Austin aint worth more than 5 at the most. But because of the messed up salaries in the NBA I have no doubt he will make 7 mill. Then in about 3 yearst teams like the Pacers are trying hard as hell to trade away these one year wonder players. It's not only ones team fault though, because if another team is desperate (Bulls) enough they will offer more money. In this scenario Pacers have to overpay. ------------------
I like the guy, but not $7 million worth! ------------------ "I've been licking this carpet for hours and I still don't feel like a lesbian!"
I guess the Pacers are going to make damn sure nobody else gets this guy. I agree that $7M is a tad pricey for a guy that hasn't proven he can be a consistent star caliber player. Take Cato, for example - he hasn't really earned his big contract either. Now, I'm not giving up on Cato just yet, but he makes a good example of how you take the risk in order to keep the guy and then hope to get the payoff in terms of potential being realized (still hoping...). It's always risky to throw money at potential but it sometimes works out (see Kevin Garnett). Then again, sometimes it doesn't (see Earvin Johnson). What's a GM to do? ------------------
So NBATalk was somewhat wrong. A 7-year $51 million contract would have him starting somewhere between $5-$6 million, assuming raises of 12.5%. That isn't as bad but still a tad pricy. As for his playoff production: (1) Stats don't mean anything and (2) in the Finals he was hustling more than anyone else on the floor; that's worth some bucks in and of itself. ------------------ Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
