This makes me think of the pipe dream-we win the championship this year. I know that's a long shot, but if we did then would we rather: 1) Do our best to retain our current team OR 2) Manage our roster to accommodate a third big star? I don't even know if we could keep Brewer and Smith or not and I don't want to lose KJ since we just got him. I lean towards answer #1 but maybe #2 is the best choice going forward. It probably comes down to how much are Brewer and Smith worth to us. On topic-I like Brewer as much as the next person but it comes down to dollars. How much is he worth to us and how much will he be offered by another team? He's 28 years old, makes 4.7 million. Probably right in his peak years. Would you pay him 6 million? More? I think he gets a raise and I'm not sure we can afford it. If you had to keep him or Smith then who do you choose? Especially if KJ might replace (sort of) Brewer?
At least they had the balls to go after those guys and not sit on their money like MOST owners/GM's. Many believe that the Rockets chances of landing Durant "WHEN" he becomes a free agent is pretty damn good. Durant is not in love with lime light or enamored by the big city, big market hoopla. He's one of the rare stars that don't craved attention and it kinda mixes well with his best friend....you may know him. James Harden You keep flexibility at all cost, but I personally do not think Brewer will cost a whole hell of a a lot of money (NBA Dollars of course lol) I would hope they make an attempt to sign him to a reasonable deal and move others for 2nd round picks and expiring contracts. I think KJ McDaniels is the insurance plan since they at least have him restricted and his stock will drop because of lack of playing time.
Just about every game that my son and I watch together I end up telling him that we need to find a way to keep Brewer on the team! Like Longhorn already stated he is definitely fun to watch! Can you imagine if we had him AND Jamal Crawford on the team?... Make it happen Mories!! Resign Brewer AND steal Crawford from the Clips!! Spoiler On top of getting our third star of course.... ....... ....... .......
Durant may turn down the Lakers and Knicks either because he hates the limelight or because those organizations may still suck in 2016. But that doesn't mean he automatically chooses the Rockets. Lots of teams could have available cap space that summer including the Wizards who are considered a favorite by many in the Durant sweepstakes because he's from DC. And despite their recent struggles, they do have a pretty solid core of young players and a need for a 3.
Brewer can guard 3 positions(4 if teams go small), runs the break like a greyhound and can finish, decent 3pt shooter, full of energy (mchale's law), team guy, etc... You don't let guys like this leave.
No one knows who the favorite is....that's mainstream media darling hoopla about Wizards being the favorite because he's from there. Of course he hasn't made mention of them or the rockets. Just because he is from DC doesn't mean anything...if that was the case, he would have gone to George Town or Maryland and not Texas. All I know if that his best friend plays for US....fact and that gives us a chance and if Morey decides to keep flexibility to sign the most lethal scorer in the league; then so f&&cking be it lol. How can any of us complain about OUR team actually going after a Superstar??? I'm not saying you in particular, but there are people who really complains about that. Really? Morey TRIES to bring in a Star and people complain?? Try being a Milwaukee Bucks fan for about 5 years and see how that works out for you.
He is my current favorite player to watch, an incredible combination of speed and hustle. Hope we can keep him.
He's not a decent 3 point shooter. He's down to 30%. He had one hot month for us, other than that he's been horrible from 3. This month he's only shooting 21% from three, last month 27%.
Players like Brewer are conducive to winning. For the right price, you don't let players like him walk. Letting Brewer walk without immediately upgrading his spot or another immediately makes this team noticeably weaker. And if that happens then next season will be the second season in a row that the roster comes back weaker than it was the season before. Maybe KJ McDaniels will be able to grow into that roll by next season. IDK
That's what I was saying earlier....I don't think you over pay Brewer if you're still looking for the final superstar type player. You try your best to secure him, but in the event that another team outbids you?; KJ was brought in for insurance. At least we have his bird rights and the chances of someone making a major offer is slim seeing the little playing time he will get BECAUSE of Brewer and Ariza. We have options
I think you're reading too much into it. The Rockets want to always maintain as much flexibility as possible. Brewer had a player option at an amount probably below what Brewer (even in December) thought he could get on the open market this summer. Therefore, it was not a huge deal for Brewer to waive the option (versus if it had been a, say, $8-9 million option year). To move from that (at the time) horrid Minnesota team that needed to develop guys like Wiggins, Muhammed and LaVine to a contending Rockets team with a desperate need for backup wings, it was not too much to ask. I doubt there have been substantial discussions between Brewer and the Rockets about his future with the team. If there have been, I doubt there was any sort of longer-term solution arrived at when Brewer was traded here in December and waived his option.
Agreed. I maintain my original position. The Rockets will have discussions with Brewer in the offseason, but their interest will be entirely contingent on what else they do with the roster.
If this is the reason they don't keep Brewer, then Morey really does need to be let go. This imaginery 3rd superstar chasing seems more about selling tickets than it is about winning a ring. The focus should be putting together a complete team. Brewer is about the best you can get as far as role players. He plays hard, he scores, he defends, he's grateful to be here. I'd hope Morey doesn't do anything stupid this offseason
During the next draft Trevor Ariza and the Pelicans 2015 first round pick will be traded to allow the signing of Brewer. Book it. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:...i1.ytimg.com/vi/LAf0QnLFS7Q/maxresdefault.jpg
The problem is the superstar chasing is as much(if not more) Les as it is Morey. That's been the Rockets' MO since they traded for Drexler 20 years ago.
In today's NBA, you need to superstar chase to contend and to get fans in the seats. Houston is not a basketball town and in the past 10 years the fan base has shifted away from being Houston sports centric. A large portion of the population now are transplants from other places and have their own sports or team rooting interests. The only way to overcome that is through having stars people like and see on TV all the time. Besides winning, LeBron helped Miami sell out games that they weren't with just Wade on the team. The same thing would happen with Durant if the Rockets got him and the potential financial return on the gamble he will come to Houston is viewed as being worth the risk of not fielding as complete a team as possible today. This is still a business and when Morey claims that Les will pay the luxury tax, he is really saying that Les will pay the tax if the composition of such a roster will lead to other financial benefits to offset the cost.
Didn't want to insinuate that there is a handshake agreement in place on a deal. Just wanted to note that the evidence seems to show that they have had conversations about what both sides plans are and will have communication. Morey himself said on the radio there is a chance he leaves as a free agent so I doubt they are committed but the communication up to this point gives me hope they will figure it out and work together to have him communicate with them while the Rockets do what they need to do and still work a way to keep him if he doesn't first find a more lucrative deal. More than likely they presented a couple scenarios where they were able to make moves and then come back to resign him afterwards just to show him how they can work through free agency. I'm just not as worried about this situation because obviously it seems as though all parties have interest in communicating which is a good start.
so...for those who know the cap space..is there any way in the summer to realistically resign all of KJ, Brewer and Josh smith ? Without any of them taking huge discounts?
