The way the league is officiated Chris Paul has everything in the world working to make him not only the best PG in the game but the best player period. People can't touch him on the perimeter, none of his own elbows get called because of his reputation, and he's so small that as long as he drives in the paint and falls down, if his shot doesn't go in he's going to shoot free throws. In fact, if his shot is just bad enough, it turns into a Tyson Chandler alley-oop assist. I hate the NBA refs.
Deron Williams IMO is the best PG in the league. Although Paul has had better stats Deron Williams contained Paul everytime they played against the Hornets(3-1 against hornets this season) If it were not for Chandler, Chris Paul wouldn't be so good, Chandler is a monster down in the post and it opens up alot of good things for Paul.
i would object to calling the jazz's style of play as "grind-it-out." they were an offensive juggernaut this season (they just play grind-it-out with us because we're a strong defensive team). that said, i agree with you that the distance between dwill and cp3 skills-wise is not as far as some are stating it is, although i do believe that cp3 is still above him and will always be.
Now that is one of the most accurate posts I've seen in a while. I'm tired of all the super opinated black and white posts. Analyze, don't just blab opinions. I like it!
Boozer, Okur, AK47, Millsap >>>>>>>>>>>>> Chandler, West, Hilton Armstrong, Melvin Ely. Deron Williams has a much better supporting cast than CP3. However, CP3 has a supporting cast that's better suited for his style of play as weird as that sounds. In addition Byron Scott is the perfect coach for CP3. On a side note I think the Rockets would've faired much better than the Mavs did and Spurs have thus far against the Hornets.
top 3 players in the L currently bar none are: 1a) lebron 1b) kobe 1c) chris paul the rest are a clear notch below paul is a level ahead of deron and nash kobe is a level ahead of tmac/wade lebron is 2-3 levels ahead of the next best SF (carmelo, paul pierce)
CP3 is far better than D-Will. It's not because you're taller and bigger that you're better. CP3 defend so well, good in steals, better passer and a better scorer, I mean people who think Deron is better are crazy. He's only better at shooting and post-up, Paul is a can score and assist more and defend better.
however, when they do matchup, deron has easily outplayed chris paul though. so you can't say he's "far" better than d-will. but paul is def. playing at a higher level more consistently.
I'd like to see that match up again next year between CP3 and DW, I think DW outplayed CP3 because he was geeked up to play him and used the hype and attention on CP3 as motivation. Gotta remember that Utah chose DW over CP3, and when DW struggled his first year, he had to hear the talk from media and fans that the Jazz picked the wrong pg. As far as I'm concerned, DW is a great allstar type of PG while CP3 is a once in a lifetime type. Throwing this out for discussion, if the Jazz picked CP3 and Hornets gets DW, how do you think they and the respective teams would fare in the role reversal.
Paul has had an incredible season, but in my book the greatest single season for a PG is Nate Archibald in '72-'73. That was the only time in history that a player lead the league in both scoring and assists in the same season. 34.0 ppg 11.4 ast/game .488 fg%
Great question for discussion, but I believe the reason the Jazz chose DW was because he fit Sloan's offense better. CP needs the ball in his hands 90% of the time to be effective. DW plays much better off the ball in a team-oriented offense. Both guys fit the system they are in. I doubt very much DW would have the Hornets performing at such a high level. I also doubt CP3 would do as well playing for Jerry Sloan as under Byron Scott. From what I've read, Sloan was brutally tough and merciless on DW his rookie season. Now, Sloan has no problem singing DW's praises publicly, but he forced DW to earn his respect with blood and tears. That type of coaching may not have worked with CP.
deron is nearly just as quick, but he's 5x stronger than paul. he can do anything with paul offensively. but deron is a much better defensive player than deron. 1-on-1 deron is better, but i think on the roles that they play for their teams, paul has much more impact. it's a team game after all.
Good call on that. I think Paul has a chance to be top 5 all-time PGs if he can maintain this and mix in a few rings for the next 10 years. Right Now: Magic Johnson Oscar Robertson Bob Cousy John Stockton Isiah Thomas Walt Frazier Nate Archibald Lenny Wilkins Sam Jones Gary Payton Jason Kidd Steve Nash Chris Paul Did I miss anybody? This is all I could think of for HoFame (or possible) PGs.
Pretty much agree with you, I think each are in the perfect team that matches their strong points. I kinda think CP3 is coachable and would have no problem to Sloan's my way or the highway attitude. I just wonder if he's physical enough to do off the ball picks that a Sloan pg is required to do. DW would struggle more in a system that freelances more and requires more individual brilliance, I just think he's just a tad less talented then CP. Huh?
deron and cp are really close imo. i think sloan eventually decided to pick deron because his physical strength suites more with sloan's physical style. but somehow, i don't think cp is all-time great material. deron williams maybe, but cp more likely is not. just my opinion.
