We need that superstar that can take us to the next level, and I think Melo is the guy that can bring us that championship with our current roaster.
Carmelo is the best scorer in the league. Yes. He is the best scorer and he's reliable through the season and in the playoffs. Obviously the trade off is like if you add a Kobe Bryant or a 2005 Tmac to a team any player of that magnitude is going to demand the ball and demand adjustments from the coach. There's no way around that. Adding Carmelo isn't going to be like adding a role player it's going to mean everyone from Yao to Chuck Hayes makes room for him on the court. But consider the upside. With Carmelo and a healthy Yao plus even half the pieces that Houston has now they're a better team than LA. Houston will be able to defend against the Lakers but LA have no answer for Yao and Melo. Basically Houston will have the advantage in every position but the 2... and right now they have multiple guys who can do a good job on Kobe on defense. But as was said upthread... it's very unlikely that he will come here unless Morey works a miracle and Houston is in pretty good shape on the court and also when the trading deadline comes around. I could understand why people wouldn't want Bosh but you dont want to add one of the top players in the league to this team? That's r****ded.
Dont you learn rocket fans... Hes doing the same thing Bosh did. You can also look at a few years ago at Beltran for the Astros. These guys just say they'll stay or want to play for Houston just to drive their own price up. If more teams are interested in them, then their price goes up. Melo is doing the same thing just to get the Nuggets to offer more money in any extension talks... I hope im wrong and he really does want to come, but if any trade happens. The Rockets will have to give up quit a bit of talent, leaving the Rockets with none other than Melo and a few others. They will have to search for more with no assets left.
The group of guys on our team right now perfectly compliment eachother. Melo is a great player, but I think he would destroy this great young core - similar to Cassell/Horry being traded for Barkley. Charles was a great player, but in the long run Cassell and Horry went on to have very successful careers and were guys we could have built around for years to come... I believe in the development system that Morey has put in place along with the pieces we have that seem to work so well together. Give it till February before worrying about what we still need to get to a championship
Melo - better all around player, and seemingly unselfish... not to mention that the way he scores is less dependent on athletic ability unlike TMAC... it seems like the players that depend heavily on athleticism ultimately break down...
I think the team we have now is one of the best we've had in a long time... wish the GARM would appreciate that. It's fun watching Brooks, Lowery, Bud, and when we had Landry grow before our eyes
This team, currently structured, will not win a championship. If we acquire Melo, we would have a better shot IMO.
I don't know that Carmelo is our last hope - but I do believe we need a true go-to-guy in the crunch to compete for a championship and I think Melo fits that bill. This brings me to a concern of mine. There is nothing worse in sports than being mediocre. And in the NBA in particular, you'll find it very difficult to ever land a superstar if you're drafting in the middle to late first round. Morey is so good at acquiring very good supporting players that we could very well remain a threat for the 4th-8th seed indefinitely. But without a superstar? Where will that take us? And how are we going to acquire that superstar? Certainly they are traded very seldom. And when was the last time one came to Houston via free agency? Scottie Pippen? And yes, even if Yao is healthy this year, he's 30 now. That window is definitely closing quickly. If we don't obtain someone like Melo or Chris Paul before the trade deadline, I honestly don't see how we can expect to contend for a championship in the next few years. We'll be very good, certainly, but not a contender. And no, I don't think a second tier star like Iggy will cut it. /end rant.
We won't have our current roster if we get him and if he couldn't lead the Nuggets, then what makes people think he can lead the Rockets? I ain't buying it. DD
Hey thanks for that.....another post...woohooo ! I am hoping that Brooks, Yao, and Martin lead this team to the championship this season.... DD
I don't know if he can or can't........he is just as unproven about leading a team to a championship as the others I mentioned. The only difference is, I know those guys will play hard night in and night out and be good teamates on and off the court. I know you guys like him, everyone wants the shiny new thing...... I want to go into this season with what we have and lace em up to see what the team can do..... I like every single player on this year's Rocket team.......and believe they may be good enough as is.... Let's find out.... Melo is not more than likely not coming anyway, so no need to argue.....I don't like the guy.....you guys do..... Ok....we can all live with that. DD
Here's the thing. I HATE him. Just like I HATE Kobe, and Lebron, and CP3, and KG. They are all PUNKs. But I also recognize that any of them would greatly improve the Rockets chances of winning. And although Carmelo is a step below those guys, he would still instantly be the best player on our team. My desire to win >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> any dislike for individual players THAT is the definition of being a FAN. If you were still wondering from before.
I agree with winning, but I don't believe that Melo makes that much of a difference because of the way he plays the game. If he was a good teamate, rebounded, played good defense passed the ball to the open man etc..etc..etc...then sure. But he is a one side of the court player who is a ball hog.....and I firmly believe that stat oriented players like that will hurt in the end.... I don't want Melo, and hope we do not get him. There are others that I do respect that are winners: Duncan Manu Wade Dirk D Will Nash Roy Jordan Bird Magic Etc...etc...etc.. Guys that go about their business and do it the right way...that is the kind of team I like to cheer for......if they get Melo, I will cheer for him, just like I did when we got Artest (YUCK)....but I doubt the team wins what you and others hope they do with him on it...his character is flawed. DD
Sometimes you just have to deal with guys with character flaws to get it done. Do you honestly think that getting Melo will decrease our chance to win it all? Are you really satisfied with our current chances of winning it all? What would you say our chance of winning it all right now is?
If the NBA as we know it ends after this season, then maybe yes. Otherwise, we still have a couple of years until 2012.
