I hope so. I started season 3 and the first episode was like the same old **** from season 2 so I haven't really cared to start it back up again. It's been over a week since I've watched, I wasn't getting the hype. To me, nothing will ever compare to The Sopranos.

Oh and now I'm a complete True Detective "trying to find clues" junkie.

Seasons 1-4 were probably the best stretch of TV I've ever seen.

As for Season 5, I'll just copy pasta from another thread where I gave my thoughts about the series.

I liked season 5 because it tore it all down. In a violent rage with a touch of redemption. Season 5 is great on the acting of BC alone.

Is it good? NO. It is the GOAT.

The reason it is the best drama on television in recent history, specifically on a channel not named HBO was the attention to detail. Vince Gilligan was a master at wrapping up story lines and arcs with a nice perfect bow... bows that just happened to blow your mind in the process. He also stayed away from classic story clichés.

Any show that can take a villain, and have you cheer for him for five seasons, is doing something right. Dexter came close, but the writing went to ****. Deadwood would have if it wasn't for that damned writer's strike (Al Swearengen is one of the best bad guys to ever grace the screen). The Sopranos of course wrote the book on it, and Boardwalk Empire has maintained the tradition nicely.

Folks who haven't watched Deadwood are really missing out. Fantastic writing, perfect casting, and some of the most compelling "bad guys" you'll ever see.

Not to mention any dialogue between Al Sweargin and Mr. Wu.

Deadwood is easily my favorite HBO show of all time. Yes, I liked it more than The Wire and Sopranos (FOR SHAME!). There were just so many complex and interesting characters to choose from.

Rome was another great one of their shows that was cut short due to the writer's strike.

Rome and Deadwood are BY FAR the 2 HBO shows I miss the most next to The Wire. I still rate The Wire as better than BB because it wasnt encumbered by the censorship a basic cable show has to stay within.

Oh, I rate The Wire better than BB as well - for many of the same reasons you do. I also liked that each season had it's own arc, rather than an all encompassing one.

Made it to the end. Good enough ending, and really good series overall, if not the last season. Just the longer it went for me, the sillier it got. I think it'd have been better if it were a couple seasons shorter, condensed down a little.

Ive been watching the wire recently for the first time and i have to say I'm kind of underwhelmed... I love the characters of Stringer and Omar and all the gangsters but I couldn't care less about the cops and that is pretty much the main focus of the show. I just hate the whole smart cop saves the day at the last second kind of stuff that constantly seems to happen in the show but maybe thats just me.

Its still better than pretty much anything on today though.

top 3 of all time- how's that for convincing?

If you like elements like character development- plus even stuff like the way it's filmed, you'll love this. Screw that person who said the only thing that matters is the story- sure, that's important- but there are films and shows that aren't completely about the plot- take 2001, for example- I still don't know what the **** the ending is about. What's with the broken wine glass? Or the body in the bed?

The dialogue was truly amazing in that show. Every single character had their own tone, and dialect.

My favorite side story was probably Hostetler and the General... I won't say his first name, lol. The dynamic between them and Steve the Drunk was fantastic (and brutal obviously).

Then there was Mr. Wu, Richardson, the Reverend - and hell, even Jack McCall. Ellsworth and Dan were probably my favorite characters outside of Al. Damn, then you have Johnny - the adorable goofball. I could go on.

@#$&, that entire cast was amazing.

The entire point of the series is to slowly build and gain evidence, and to show that happenign. The character Lester Freamon explains it perfectly.

"You start following the money, and you don't know where the #$%& it will take you..."
    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ShWe-4mtV8w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    And...

See 4:30 in this video -
    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/l7nUGeawmds" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    And...

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Kl-Wv9eEl9E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And here is probably the best scene ever...

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/1lElf7D-An8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

At it's time, it was truly amazing. Now we are in the "golden age of television" and expect more from dramas, but it was the quintessential dialogue driven drama.
