The last time I looked Kandiwas looking for the 'MAXIMUM' and Maggette has a good offer from the Utah Jazz.Miller has been offered $9 mil/yr by the Denver Nuggets.

leebigez: "Trade Cato and Taylor to Minny for Jackson and Brandon. Taylor keeps Garnett at the 3spot and Cato gives them a center. Jackson gives us a backup at the 4 and 5 spot and Brandon comes off the books in January. Lets do it."

WTF for? We already have a backup at the 4 and 5 spot (Cato and Taylor) and a contract that comes off the books in June (Rice). Are you trading away two solid contributors just to save some cap space? Having a lot of cap space is no guarantee of success in the offseason -- just look at San Antonio and Utah. If we have a great team on the way up, we'll attract talent even with the MLE, like the Lakers. In a year or two, people may be lining up for a chance to play alongside Steve Francis and Yao Ming.

It's not the same money, JBC!

    Cat makes 5 mil
    EG makes 2.

Maggette was just offered 13 mil per, 78/6!
Miller's Denver deal was closer at 9per, 55/6!

Odom would be close (8-9?), but with these deals, looks like his val. goes up. Clips will be ok with 1 yr tender.

    Rice makes 9.

Brand has been offered 13 per by Clips on 78/6. Utah would also max.

    carry on.

My take is no way Clips match deals for Miller or Maggette. Too much money. Brand is the # 1, but if he informs them he's gonzo, they need to fish for the best deal.

Odom gets 1 yr tender. They can afford to wait till mid season on him. He might get injured again; and the market is crazy now.

Kandi goes and they might take the s&t, to fill out the team. They have to hit the minimum salary number.

Clips ideal return in trades is cheap players that score, draft picks, and expiring contracts.

This means we can make an offer of some combination of Cat EG and Rice for Brand/contract. I'd offer all three for Brand/Q.

    Q is also restricted.

Taylor and Cato for Brandon and Jackson...

Jackson isn't that bad. He's at the same level as Taylor. He's just a dirty worker...

Cato leaves but we get Brandon's nice relief. They don't want Brandon anyways.

Glen Rice's contract is gone too!

    Taylor's contract adios!

    Cato's contract adios!

    Francis/Moochie
    Mobley/Hawkins
    Posey/Nachbar
    Griffin/Jackson
    Yao/Jackson

Wow.....how much cap space would we have? Or would we trade Mobley + Griffin + somebody else and draft picks for Elton Brand + sombody else?

    Nice lee......elaborate!

Would you rather pay 1 guy 4.5m to do 2 jobs or 2 guys 15m to do the same to jobs? The trade I propsed would be good for both teams. Minny is desperate to get outof the 1st rd and we should be desperate to get rid of dumb contracts. Jackson could play 13mins at pf and 13mins at center. If need be, he could start effectively at either spot if need be. Minny will probably lose Rasho and Howard to other teams. Their bonus is that they have a 11m expiring contract in January. Its kinda like sleeping with the enemy, but the trade could be a precurosr for the other trade i proposed. Here is Minny lineup.

Cassell,Wally,Garnett,Tayor and Cato. This lineup would give them the best chance to get out of the first rd that they've ever had. some might can argue that this team would be almost as good as Dallas and Sa. That lineup would be enough to get Garnett to resign with them after the season. What do it do for us? It lifts a very heavy weight from a salary point of view without totally compromising the team. Jackson could swing both spots and provide scoring inside and outside while continuing Eddie development. With Brandon and Rice off the books at the end of the season, our chances of getting someone who may really help us increases. Vision is sorely need when looking at whats best for a team like this.

OK, I get it. But I don't think it helps us now, when we're trying to reach the playoffs, just in the future, and that's purely hypothetical. There's no guarantee that when the 2004 FA signing period comes around, we will come up with someone better than Cato or Taylor.

That's my point. We're giving up a lot of talent. I think we're better off with Cato and Taylor than a hypothetical free agent in 2004. (Note: that's an opinion, not a fact.)

leebigez: "Give Taylor away. As harsh as it may sound, if somehow Brand was sent here, their would be no need to have a 8m a yr backup. [...] CD calls Baylor and says we will give you a expiring contract in Rice and a small contract in Griffin for Brand signed and traded at 11mill a season. Lets suppose and thats a big suppose, he bites on it. Now we're left with 20m in pf's. The same time this happens, CD is on the phone with McHale."

lbz, my apologies. I stumbled onto p. 2 of this thread by mistake. I didn't realize we already had Brand in your Minn. trade scenarion.

Go for it, Rockets! I'll trade Cato, Griffin, Taylor, and Rice for Brand, Jackson, and a hypothetical free agent.

no im not wrong. Brand is gay.I thought everyone already knew this already. Besides,if hes not gay, then he is one dumbass. He actually perfers to play with Mags instead of sign with spurs and play with Duncan or a s&t with houston to play with ming/francis. Theres obviously something going on behind close doors for him to love mags that much. Not to mentian utah is one boring ass state.

    carry on

The San Antonio Spurs have found their replacement for retired center David Robinson.

Free-agent center Rasho Nesterovic will sign a six-year contract estimated at $45 million with the Spurs, agent Bill Duffy told ESPN.com's Marc Stein on Tuesday.

    Nesterovic

Rasho Nesterovic narrowed his wish list down to two teams (Minnesota and San Antonio) and one long shot (New York). The defending champion Spurs, with two-time MVP Tim Duncan, won out.

"Rasho has a great fondess for Gregg Popovich," Duffy told ESPN.com. "This is a great opportunity to join a championship-caliber organization."

The Spurs, struggling to make use of their $15 million-plus in salary-cap space despite winning their second NBA title in franchise history last month, had been pursuing Nesterovic aggressively since missing out on Jason Kidd, Alonzo Mourning and P.J. Brown. The Spurs were also in talks with Indiana's Brad Miller.

Nesterovic already has a seven-year offer on the table worth more than $50 million from the Wolves, who desperately wanted to keep Nesterovic alongside Kevin Garnett on their front line. Minnesota was also hoping to add power forward Juwan Howard, but the Orlando Sentinel reported in Monday's editions that Howard has picked the Magic over the Wolves.

Marc Stein is the senior NBA writer for ESPN.com. To e-mail him, click here. Also, send Stein a question for possible use on ESPNEWS.

I don't think its that big of a talent that we're giving out. Desperate times for desperate measures. The T'Wolves are in a bigger quandry than we are. The Rockets just need to make the playoffs which i think they will with or without Taylor and Cato. Minny on the other hand has to convince Garnett that they have enough talent to get out of the 1st rd. Its more like I help you and you help me.

Trading Taylor and Cato for Jackson and Brandon isn't no where near the coup Minny pulled earlier by getting Cassell. Getting Taylor and Cato gives them a solid starting 5 that can help their superstar player stay. The Rockets on the other hand need to get rid of the ridiculous contracts to bench players without disrupting the core integrity of the team. Let me give you a scenerio and just on ideas.

Say Griffin dramatically improves and becomes a solid 14pt 9rebs 2.blks kind of guy. In the same deal, lets suppose Ming improves his stamina and can play 35-37mins a night at a high level. Would you feel confortable paying Taylor 8mil a season for 13mins of work and Cato 7m for the same 13mins or would you feel better paying Jackson 4.5m for 26mins of work?

If you're like alot of people who tend to think we need Taylor for another yr just in case Eddie doesn't work out , then keep him. If you think Cato is the best backup in the league then keep him also. I'm just stating that maybe a chance like this doesn't come around to often. A chance to wash your hands clean of mistakes that were made without giving up core players. If you don't think so, then so be it. Minny is desperate and i think we should capitalize on it now.

    leebigez,

From a marketing perspective...is this deal (Mo and Cato for Jackson and Brandon), basically trading talent* for cap space, what you sell to a market that you would like purchase open executive suites in a new arena?

I see the logic in your proposal and I concur that these opportunities don't happen everyday. Timing is everything, and the potential seems there, but (1) you don't make a Western Conference competitor** clearly better than you and (2) you don't give away key rotation people for cap space in a year that you are desperate to make the playoffs.

IMO, without Cato and Taylor, we lose more games than we would with them and EVERY game will count in getting to the playoffs...I'm not assuming that without Cato and Taylor we make the playoffs.

    * I use the term loosely
** Knowing they are a top-5, but perhaps we lose two more games to the T-Wolves if they have our guys on their roster than if they were on ours. Two games could be the difference in making the playoffs given the relative strength of the teams fighting to get in.

Whoa! Denver's offer started at $5.5 million per year. No wonder he wants to go to Utah!

Okay, so maybe the Clips might want a Mobley at 5+ million per year.

Let's throw in Mobley for Szczerbiak while were at it, and you have a deal.

I think you may have gotten your numbers mixed up. ESPN was reporting that Maggette's offer from Utah was closer to 7 mil per (a Cato-esque 6 years, 42 mil)

ESPN also reported that the Clippers latest offer to Brand was $78 million over six years...which is where the 13 mill per comes into play.

Either way, Cat's contract is a bargain compared to whatever Maggette gets from Utah.

    land shark,
thank you for pointing out how this trade makes no sense. making minny better and getting rid of "mistakes" is a good way to get to the lottery again. i have no idea why we would do that. also, why would we keep griff over mo-t? griff is a bust. plain and simple. with lots of work, he could be a bo outlaw, but he has no fire, so i doubt even that. but hey, thats just my take.

Okay - here it is - a plausable trade: :)

    Houston trades:
PF Maurice Taylor (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.0 apg in 20.6 minutes)
    C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes)
SG Cuttino Mobley (17.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.9 apg in 41.7 minutes)
PF Eddie Griffin (8.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.5 minutes)

    Houston receives:
SG Wally Szczerbiak (17.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.6 apg in 35.3 minutes)
PF Marc Jackson (5.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.5 apg in 13.5 minutes)
PG Troy Hudson (14.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 5.7 apg in 32.9 minutes)
PF Brian Grant (10.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 1.3 apg in 32.2 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +8.6 ppg, +0.4 rpg, and +4.8 apg.

    Minnesota trades:
PF Terrell Brandon (8.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.5 minutes)
SG Wally Szczerbiak (17.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.6 apg in 35.3 minutes)
PF Marc Jackson (5.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.5 apg in 13.5 minutes)
PG Troy Hudson (14.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 5.7 apg in 32.9 minutes)

    Minnesota receives:
PF Maurice Taylor (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.0 apg in 67 games)
    C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 73 games)
SG Cuttino Mobley (17.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.9 apg in 73 games)
PF Eddie Griffin (8.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.1 apg in 77 games)
Change in team outlook: +1.7 ppg, +9.8 rpg, and -3.5 apg.

    Miami trades:
PF Brian Grant (10.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 1.3 apg in 32.2 minutes)

    Miami receives:
PF Terrell Brandon (8.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.1 apg in 77 games)
Change in team outlook: -10.3 ppg, -10.2 rpg, and -1.3 apg.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

Minnesota lost out on Nester and Howard, so Cato and MoT would be their consolation prize. They make Garnett happy by getting rid of Szczerbiak (and his huge contract), in exchange for a more reasonably priced Mobley. EG is gravy for them.

Miami has missed out on the prize free agents this summer - maybe next summer can be different. As such, they can dump Grant's contract in exchange for the cap room Brandon's slot will create next year (to make a run at McGrady or Kobe, etc.)

All Houston will then need to do is sign a backup power forward, to play a few minutes behind Grant.
