Damn, how badly has he played this preseason to get released by the Browns?

There's no way the Browns would cut their 3rd round pick. That's just stupid.

This was pure opinion of a sport writer with no basis behind it. No way you cut a 3rd round pick after 2 preseason games.

I guess the answer to the thread is YES.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...wns-could-keep-four-quarterbacks-or-just-two/

"That's something that we will talk about as the cuts get closer," Mangini said. "I've kept four as a head coach and have been on teams that have kept four as an assistant coach. I have also been on [teams that only kept] two."

Cutting a third-round draft pick before the regular season starts is rare, but not unheard of. It seems like a long shot that McCoy would get cut, but Mangini's comments suggest that the Browns aren't ruling it out.

It would be hilarious if he got cut. I don't think it is likely to happen, but the UT honks clamoring for Bob McNair to sign him would be pretty funny.

    Ooops...apparently he didn't :

    ---------------------------------------

    He said:

(On if he is using the last preseason games to determine the third and fourth quarterback positions)- “The nice thing about the last game is both of those guys will get a ton of time to play. That will help provide some clarity and that’s one of the real positives of that fourth preseason game. For a situation like that, you get to evaluate a lot of guys that may not have gotten the same level of reps through the first three preseason games. I think that will help it. I think that both Colt (McCoy) and Brett (Ratliff) have some real positives and they’re coming at this situation a little bit differently with Brett having more experience. We will just have to see and talk about it. That’s something that I definitely sit down with Mike (Holmgren) and talk about and get his thoughts on it and Brian (Daboll). That’s the real benefit to have Mike here as well.”

Essentially, he said nothing. This little controversy you got going on, is nothing more than Grossi at the Plain Dealer throwing out wild conjecture. The little greasy spot declared McCoy on the "bubble" yesterday and didn't ask the question 'til today.

    -------------------------------------------------

You guys are so desperate to see him fail...which is so weak sauce of all of you.

I'm not desperate to see him fail, I just think he sucks and won't amount to anything in the NFL.

    Just a personal opinion.

When you're a lightening rod you're going to rub people the wrong way.

Not my fault if they can't handle the truth.

While I am not too confident in the abilities of Colt in the pros, for a team as awful as the Browns to cut their third round pick (especially one with the media following of McCoy) would be absurd.

Whether or not he will live up to it, McCoy is the "QB of the future" for that organization, and to cut him after two preseason games in favor of BRETT RATLIFF would be a terrible PR move for a city desperately searching for an identity now that King James is gone.

I like Colt and UT, and most likely this is Mangini's way of speaking politically correct. You know the hardball, NFL coach type - no jobs are guaranteed and everyone has to earn their place. Clearly, Colt isn't ready to play at the level of Delhomme or Wallace in his first year, and Mangini is essentially saying he has to earn a place like everyone else. Is it true? I doubt it for a lot of reasons - it's just one of those things coaches say.

With that said, I don't agree with the above logic and it cracks me up when people talk about bad "PR moves" for NFL organizations (see Texans, 2006). If Colt really is that bad and you feel Ratliff has a future, you what's right for your football team. Because in the long run, winning games - not any feel-good identity stuff - is what matters for PR. And it's quite a stretch to equate a third-round pick, regardless of his status in Austin, even on a small level to the hole that is LeBron James' departure.

I agree with the second paragraph totally. I'm just in the camp that can't really believe that Brett Ratliff brings much more to the table than Colt right now. If he does, then by all means cut Colt. But if they are both third stringers, why not keep the bigger name? And by no means was I alluding to Colt replacing Lebron- that's impossible. I worded it poorly, but basically Cleveland fans are desperate for a new face for the city, and regardless of whether I think he will be that or not, it just seems dumb to give up on one of the most successful college QB's ever after just 2 games.

I'm not desperate to see him fail, but if I was, why is that weaksauce?

As sports fans, we cheer for teams and players to either win or fail all the time.
