Graphic quality of a Blu Ray is outstanding. It makes it clear just how great owning an HDTV is. I just wonder how long/if it will really reach DVD levels of domination. One of the problems is the prices can still get too crazy.

DVD's popularity was not because of the superior picture quality vs VHS
it was because it was more compact and that you didn't have to rewind.
you can also skip to the scene you want really fast.

The Super Nintendo didn't game popularity until it released a game called Street Fighter 2.

    I love bluray.

I have a PS3. and along with my Sony 1080p TV + HDMI cable I lovez it. LOL

I only wish I had a home theater system. It's like having a system in your car but no subwoofers. lol

and no speakers. come on dude, your tv is not getting dolby digital/dts etc
its getting stereo sound. so its more like a car with factory speakers and factory cd player.

it really doesn't cost that much to get a decent receiver and some speakers.

What's the difference? I don't know what I have, but I know I was one of the few first in Houston with u-verse. I know it comes to the house through the phone line, then coax into the house, then network, then HDMI. ;)

Anyway, yeah, Blu-ray IS all that.

Hell yeah it's all that, it's worth it.

I knew it was amazing but I didn't know what I was really missing until I hooked up my PS3 over Thanksgiving break to the new 52" Samsung 120Hz LN52A750 LCD my parents just bought at home.

Once you have it in your home, you won't want to have to go without it.

I read that if it's Fiber to the house then you're not bottle necked like those who get Fiber to the node and then copper the rest of the way to your house/apartment.

Are you kidding? While I'm with your ideas on HD and the such, you are wrong on quite a few things here.

The video superiority between DVD and VHS was greater than that of Bluray and DVD. It was LEAPS and bounds better. The disparity in audio quality was even greater. I do agree with you that not having to rewind and the ability to skip to scenes was a huge selling point as well but to say that the quality of video and audio was not relevant is silly.

I love Bluray and buy them exclusively now because the quality is better. It is noticeable. That being said, I don't see the difference in quality being drastic. The way things up convert now, and it may just be my system, I still think DVDs have great quality.

Also, I think you are being ridiculously nostalgic about Street Fighter 2. It was a great game but it had zero to do with the popularity of Super Nintendo. SN was wildly popular before, during, and after SF2. It had a fantastic catalog of games and would have been just as popular without SF2.

Dude, I know that DVD has vastly better video/audio than VHS, but that's not the main reason it sold.

you remember a place called Blockbuster video? remember the late fees if you didn't rewind? yeah. that was one of the main reasons CONSUMERs bought it, if not the main reason.

Dude, the Sega Genesis ruled the console world, then what happened? was it super mario bros?

I definitely know my old school console history:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter

Numerous home versions of the Street Fighter II games have been produced following the original game. The original Street Fighter II was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. As of 2008, the original SNES game is still Capcom's best selling game.[3] It was followed by a Japanese-only version of Street Fighter II Dash for the PC Engine in 1993. Hyper Fighting received two different home versions as well in 1993, an SNES version titled Street Fighter II Turbo, and a Sega Genesis counterpart titled Street Fighter II′ - Special Champion Edition (Street Fighter II Dash Plus in Japan). The following game, Super Street Fighter II, was also ported to the SNES and Genesis in 1994. During that same year, Super Street Fighter II Turbo was later released for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer.

Street Fighter SNES Is Capcom's Best Selling Game
Tuesday 27-May-2008 12:45 PM Nintendo game tops developer's list
    11 Comments
Capcom, the developer of Resident Evil, has announced that a Super Nintendo game from 1992 is the company's best selling title of all time. Yes, Street Fighter 2 is Capcom's number one, beating the likes of Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and Onimusha.

Resident Evil, with 50 games to its name, may be the best-selling series of all time but the classic beat-'em up is still number one, some 16 years after its original release.

Street Fighter II isn't the only game in the series to make Capcom's list of best-selling Platinum games (games that have sold over one million copies). Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES, 1993) came in at number three with sales of 4.1 million while Super Street Fighter II (SNES, 1994) is further down the list at number 12 having sold 2 million copies.

Other Capcom games on Nintendo consoles that have sold more than one million copies include:-

    Aladdin (SNES, 1.75 million)
    Duck Tales (NES, 1.67m)
    Ghosts N Goblins (NES, 1,64m)
    Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, 1.6m)
    Mega Man 2 (NES, 1.51m)
    Final Fight (SNES, 1.48m)
    Duck Tales (Game Boy, 1.43m)
    Resident Evil (GC, 1.35m)
Mega Man Battle Network 4 (GBA, 1.35m)
    Resident Evil 0 (GC, 1.25m)
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (Wii, 1.25m) Magical Quest Starring Mickey (SNES, 1.21m) Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers (NES, 1.2m)
    Mega Man X (SNES, 1.16m)
    Commando (NES, 1.14m)
Super Ghouls N Ghosts (NES, 1.09m)
    Mega Man 3 (NES, 1.08m)
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii, 1.05m)
    Final Fight 2 (SNES, 1.03m)

Just because you throw a bunch of **** on the wall doesn't mean it's all going to stick.

And yes, it is because of Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World to be specific. SMW sold over 20 Million copies to SF2's 6 Million copies. Here are the top 5 games sold for the SNES.

    Super Mario World (20 million)
    Donkey Kong Country (8 million)
    Super Mario Kart (8 million)
    Street Fighter II (6.3 million)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (4.61 million)

Here are the top selling games for the Genesis:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (6 million)
    Sonic the Hedgehog (4 million)
    Aladdin (4 million)
NBA Jam (1.93 million in US)
Mortal Kombat 2 (1.78 million in US)

    According to this link:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

SNES had 40 games that sold over 1 Million copies while the Genesis had only 9.

So while SF2 may have been Capcom's best selling game, it wasn't the best selling game on EITHER console. Not even close. So I think my arguement that the SNES was popular before, during, and after SF2 stands. It would have done just fine without it. Luckily for all of us, we had it but your revisionist history is way off.

Blu-Ray from DVD is a bigger jump than DVD from VHS. The reason people were finally willing to accept DVD was the ability to record TV on DVR's.

That's ridiculous and not even close. You obviously haven't watched a VHS tape in a while because it is\was horrible.

The exclusivity of SF2 on the SNES a year longer than Genesis put it ahead full steam. you forgot that part did ya?

And I am right about the reason why consumers switched to DVD, the main reason being the rewinding and Blockbuster/video rental reason.

Remember way back in the day, buying a video was not an option cause it cost like $75, so everybody rented.

I'll find that article for you later.

    VHS = 330×480

    DVD = 720×480

    Blu-Ray = 1920×1080

Who cares if it was exclusive a year longer? You said that SF2 was the reason that SNES won the 16 bit console war and that is just not true. SNES sold MILLIONS more games of all sorts other then SF2. SF2 was and is still a great game. It did not define the winner of the console war.

I'd be willing to concede that not having to rewind may have been the number 1 reason to switch to DVD. I still believe that the jump in audio quality between DVD and VHS is greater than Bluray and DVD.

I remember is Sega had a 65% market share in the home video game market in the late 80s early 90s. Never really understood how it crashed so fast but I guess this explains it.

This is subjective because technically the bitrate jump from DVD to Blu-Ray is huge but Dolby Digital (that DVD was later capable of) sounds pretty good.
