He brings some talent that can not be seen by any boxscore or math geek.

everyone knows what he brings to the table doesn't show up on the boxscore, he is a hustler, a leader, and a great defender. in memphis he had to do more to win, here he simply was givin the reigns to the defense and that's what he does best

battier's not underutilized. his only offensive move is that baby hook of his. i don't think anyone's ever seen him drive to the basket and finish, but he knows how to draw a foul when he does drive. i wish he'd be more aggresive but i think that would just expose his lack of offensive ability.

I voted he has gotten better. But the reality is (in my opinion) he has become much better defender in Houston, but his offense has been worse, though.

If you mean "top 10 Personal Fouler", then yes.

Trade him now when his trade value is at an all time high.

He was a better player in memphis. He was a baasketball player vs a specialty guy. Go look at how and where he scored regardless of having yao and tracy. He would actually go to the rim, post smaller guys, shoot mid range shots, and ruun the break.People want to talk how hard a worker he is, but I guess that doesn't mean working on your game.Solid player who shouldn't have ever been traded for #8 pick and a mle contract. I am ready for the fight today :D. That includes u too DD.

Battier's efficiency numbers haven't changed that much, but his usage rate has been on a steady decline basically since his rookie year. In 2003/2004, he averaged 10 shots per 36 minutes, last year he averaged just over 6. If a player takes 4 fewer shots, in the same amount of playing time, his efficiency should go up, since he's taking higher-percentage shots on average than he was before. I mean, it's not like those 4 shots Battier used to take but doesn't anymore were layups and wide-open 3's.

Bob, don't feel bad, most on this board would give shane a lifetime contract.

Shoulda had the option of "SAME". Its not absolute that he's better or worse.

There's overvaluing points and scoring. Then there's overjustifying pure NON-scoring. Its like how low does the scoring have to go and how much intangibles can one muster to make up for not putting pressure on the other team's defense?

I do appreciate Battier staying within his limitations. He realizes he has no dribbling and first step quickness. Now he's just turned into a 1 dimensional spot up shooter. His offensive approach has regressed. He should have never had that good scoring rookie year.

Overall suprisingly I'd still say he's about what he's always been, minus his 1st couple years in the league. Not gonna fault him for going into his 30's in Houston. Maybe cuz I never projected big upside in him.

I'm still miffed at what made the rox go into win now mode. Had they just gotten ousted in the conf finals, I could see it, but we were frsh off a lotto yr with a older, size challenge barry and wesley and limited athleticism. It still baffles me to this day.

    oh come on bigez,

    you know why.

people and the media think that yao/tmac were the next kobe/shaq. shane would be the horry/rick fox guy.

One distinction REPEATEDLY ignored in Battier conversations is that people often talk about Battier being a top-10 value due to the role he plays so well, not due to being a volume scorer. If we're talking value to a contending team, I would list Battier in the top 25% of NBA small forwards. If we're talking share of the offense, that's a whole other story.

Most of us, having seen Battier play personally for a few years now, have solidified our opinions regarding Battier. Either we like him because he adds a dimension to the team, or we're disappointed because of the dimensions he doesn't bring.

Tinman, la wouldn't have ever given up a top 10 pick for horry or rick fox. Hell, they didn't even trade the oft injured bynum for kidd who was still wrecking then. It was a piss poor decision that they are still trfying to correct.

No,they don't. He is less effective as a scorer,he used to be better than what he is now. He has gotten better as a defender. It's always up to a player as to how much he wants to get involved. He is capable of doing a bit more than only spotting up,but he hardly does more than that, because of a lack of confidence.

No one is asking him to become a ball handling, creative penetrator, but coaches call out more plays when they see a desire from a player to get involved.
