The US is, sadly, moving towards a fractured tribal society. One of the victims of this will be the public space. In fact, I think the very concept of a public space will be difficult for future Americans to even comprehend.

In the future, anything public will be non functioning, and anything privatized will be barely functioning. Any approximation of what most middle class Americans enjoy today (and take for granted) will be available to only a tiny fragment of the population, and what they have will be heavily fortified and mostly concealed from public view.

the hunger games and equilibrium are two movies that come to mind

Houston is basically the epitome of a society moving to a place that provides the most satisfaction for the cost.

material satisfaction, particularly. Houston is relatively cheap and allows people to maintain a higher material wealth standard of living. Combined with the Texan value of "bigger is better", this city of ours is the biggest enemy in the path towards the progression of the human race in terms of efficient use of all resources

despite this, Houston offers a very unique opportunity... a very efficient blend of sprawl, tall buildings, public transport, and private transport would be needed as erring towards one extreme probably wouldn't work

I am glad to live out on the rural plains of the central U.S. where we can eat whatever we want, make the friends we want, and get in my own car with my husband or my soon-to-be-born child and relish the freedom of movement and exploring the road. That is how my family bonds. No desire to live or spend extended time in Europe or anything like it. Such places already exist for those who want that. That is my politically incorrect opinion. :) Also, out here, people really do not like being told what to do by government authorities.

To his defense, why would he bother doing research if in the end he'll just be slinging poo?

Lol, Issy baby. You ever tasted a colored man? It'll give you a good break from the monotony of farm life and unaesthetic love making.

    Call me.

Eh, Ho Chi Min. Vietnam just isn't my scene. Not enough foreigners, too much clutter/dust and the local women don't have an elegant, sexual quality to them. You always feel like a tourist there - it's never quite home. And damn, people do a lot of cocaine!

In Pan Pacific Asia, I'm a big fan of Koh Phi Phi Don in Thailand and several nearby islands like Perhentian and Redang in Malaysia. Of course Langkawi and Phuket get all the press but if you want true Scandinavian subcultures, crystal clear water, great natural scenery, a bevy of rock climbing/scuba diving/recreational options, and truly beautiful girls, these are the places to go.

But ultimately, pan pacific Asia is always going to be a getaway or a tourist destination for me. Not somewhere where I can see myself buying property. I'm far more interested in the Mediterranean coast and Australia.

Since the country seems to be moving in the complete opposite direction, I'm thinking no. It looks likely that future generations won't be able to afford the inefficiencies of our golden age, but I don't think they'll find the efficiency in communalism. They'll find it in efficient, individualist capitalism.
