yes, especially since essentially, during the entire epoch of the Early Middle Ages there is no "what if" about it. Islam was the rich, powerful "world policeman" that came about two inches away from crushing the Franks in the West and even driving the Chinese back from much of Central Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Talas).

how far the mighty can fall---maybe a reminder that 150 years of history is nothing?

ehhhhh---as the Chinese would say, "5000 years up, 5000 years down."

Or, alot of them just might not know what it's like to be outnumbered, potentially not fit in or how to socially adjust to it on a routine basis. Nothing exceptionally suppressive or elitist about that.

There is nothing wrong with uncertainty, as you've said here.

But I think what would be unsettling to most people is if the reaction was fear or quasi-horror.

The difference is night and day.

It seems that uncertainly results from careful unbiased analysis where a lack of experience is missing. This is basically the people who are unsettled at first, but then realize that the behavior of the new population is no different than the behavior of the old population if given exposure to the exact same socio-politico-economic atmosphere.

Fear on the other hand has become the red flag for the new-age racists and bigots. It becomes their shield, their weapon, and their status-quo. It generally results from an inability to trust a different group, despite offering trust to members of their own group who are equally different.

There are always exceptions obviously, but this is what I've observed as a third-culture kid. In Turkey/Iran, I'm an Arab. In the UAE, I'm an Iranian/Turk. In Europe, I'm a 'Muslim', and am seen as a single-culture person. I can tell you that there is nothing more refreshing than meeting uncertainty, and nothing more unnerving than meeting fear.

If my country was suddenly heavily populated with people of another race, I would be worried. But this growth in hispanics in America seems to be a gradual one and I'd think there is basically no one who hasn't worked with them and lived in the same neighborhood, etc. The only fear that I can fathom is if the government is not independent enough to guarantee the rights of everyone equally - which should have always been the case, regardless of the demographics. If someone is only now worried about things like that, it makes me wonder why they were not worried and taking action when 'they' were the majority.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.. America is a champion of multiculturalism and I hope Americans are willing defenders of that title. It's something worth standing up for, and can always serve as an example to other countries around the world. Ultimately, I see it as possibly the most effective way to generate fruitful relationships with people around the world such that America doesn't have to spend trillions of dollars on invasions and wars to eliminate oppressive and dangerous regimes. I don't think enough is done to market this, and this is a perfect time to do that as Europe flushes their credibility in this department away.

But they never did crush Christianity, that's what counts. How many dramatic events took place in history because of stupid impulsive behaviors from rulers and peasants alike or nature's hilarious untimely interference? Citing one military campaign's outcome and importance...you might as well over analyze them all and made a messy tree diagram of hundreds of potential outcomes of where we could theoretically be today

I don't think 上下五千年 is the appropriate thing to use here.

    Sarcasm, I'm so flattered.

I wanted to see what terribly generic response Steve_Francis_rules was going to come up with being the one so quick to jump on the "durrrr we dook slavz from afrikaa" route, instead I got a clown pestering me nonstop and him nowhere to be seen.

You just like to hear yourself talk, don't you? Consistency?

And your TV told you that?

Oh wise master of sweeping statements. Why don't you explain to us - in detail - how you, as someone who works for a dictatorship, have the moral authority to say that Europe, which, as a whole, has given shelter and asylum to countless refugees - "flushes its credibility in this department away". Please also provide a detailed comparison of the UAE/other Arabic countries with Europe in that regard.

    Thanks in advance.

You're not going to get the answer you want from me because it's pretty clear that the only answer you will accept is that they didn't do it in Africa because white people are inherently superior to other races.

They needed the 2010 census to figure this out? I thought it was already an established fact in 2006.
What a complete waste of time that damned census. They're still not building more classrooms, instead they're cutting back.

All I want is for certain politicians, from a certain party,to chill out with some of their obstinate views. Whether they like it or not, we, illegal or legal, are part of this melting pot.
And death to reggaeton before it's too late!!!

    1) Key word: suddenly. I've told you to beef up that English, seems that this is causing a lot of misunderstanding for you.

    2) History told me that. America is a country built on immigration, although it came at the expense of Native Americans.

    3) LOL! It's irrelevant. Even a slave rapist can put forth an argument against Europe's ways, as long as it's a valid discussion. As far as credibility goes, this is a message board. But I'm not surprised that you have profiled me here in such a way that you expect verified credentials from me but not anyone else. Speaks to the heart of the problem.

I've told you before and I'll tell you again, my work is none of your business. I'm happy to talk about it and if anyone is interested they can email me, but not to you specifically because you have shown a pattern of abusing personal information which people provide on this board.

Now stop trying to make this thread about me/you, you have derailed too many threads already. This thread is about immigration in the US and your interest in my personal life is irrelevant.

At the very least, show some respect to the OP and the other posters who are tired of you steering the conversation to the same place over and over again.

Mathloom, since you have not seen how some immigrants live in some cities in the USA, you are not very qualified to talk about US vs. Europe on that.

And it is not irrelevant. You have no credibility when you talk from a moral high horse about Europe. You like to make pompous statements? From what high ground are you talking? And no, a slave-owning rapist would not have credibility either.

Oh, and about that English (by the way, where did your holier than thou "let's not make this thread about you and me" go when you made that comment?), I think your comment speaks for itself and people here can judge my English for themselves (not that it matters too much, but I was in the 99th percentile on the GMAT, if you know what that is).

I don't think you understand my point.

So I'll spell it out and make it plain as day---

150 years of dominance is NOTHING in world history. here one day, gone the next.

150 years is being generous with how the United States has fared these last few decades.

The arrogance you and several other Americans have is simply amusing, especially when you disparage Muslims and Africans-the same people who for a much longer period of time, held the specter of world influence and contributed to human learning on several levels, including being part of the spark of the same Renaissance that made all of what we currently hold as Western civilization as possible. Muslim Spain and her North African Moor conquerors held the Hellenistic texts that preserved thousands of years of Roman and Greek wisdom.

But I find it a remarkable American habit to disparage her elders. After all, who cannot help but mock the French-the same people who gave America the social contract the American Constitution is based on, the same people who financed the American Revolution, and the same people who built the Statue of Liberty?

One would think, given the ebb and flow of history, some humility would be readily welcome-an appreciation of how America fits inside the mosaic of history as one small part of a movement of many empires, rather then an all-extolling triumphalism that often degrades into sickly and arrogant nationalism. i suppose it isn't surprising-how must have the average Roman citizen felt at the peak of Caeser's triumphs? but it is amusing-and slightly overdone to the point of (mild) annoyance. and unwise-----

As others have posted, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice that the percentage of the Hispanic population is increasing, especially in cities/areas closer to the Mexican border. Rather than making sweeping and pompous statements on this like you, who has never even seen how and if the Hispanics e.g. in Houston are integrated into the community, I would rather read more of people's comments first.

As a general comment, I think that people who immigrate to a country should learn the language of that country, and when they do not do that, for whatever cultural reasons, I think it is a problem, and if, in some settings, you, as someone who was born in the country and speak the language of the country, are in the minority and those who do not speak the language of the country at all or not well and immigrated into the country become the majority, then it is a problem also for those who have been there first.

All that said, I don't see an issue of whether a certain ethnicity's percentage of the overall population is growing or not, the issue is education and language, crime prevention, social security. It makes a difference on many levels (acceptance, integration, living together) if you get a large inflow of educated people or a large inflow of people who have no education and immediately go into the welfare system. Completely non-managed immigration obviously leads to problems.

Mathloom, what would you say if there was a large influx of people who cannot read or write and have no education from, let's say, Cote d'Ivoire to the United Arab Emirates, many of them would not be able to work, only live off of welfare, and would not learn Arabic and would over a few decades become the majority in the United Arab Emirates (and I am not talking about the quasi-slave workers from India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka/Indonesia who are in the UAE largely under inhumane working and living conditions, but about people who do not work and live off of welfare).

I am not saying it is the same situation as in this hypothetical, but before you go off making sweeping, pompous statements about Europe and the USA (a place you have never been to), you should try imagining yourself in their situation.

But db can fill in at least half of a blank map of Africa and apparently has some cogent thoughts global development disparities, that for some reason he is withholding from rest of us.
