Dammit! I know, I know. I saw that as soon as I posted, but with no edit, I was hoping you guys would let it pass. I guess not.
OK, I didn't see the game, but it IS illegal for a player to use one of his teammates to get extra height when trying to block a field goal...is that what the fuss is about?
Seems like a poorly worded rule. You can't go from more than a yard back and go vertical without landing on your own feet first? It looked like Rice did come down first on the back of a teammate, but he didn't use his teammates back to go even higher. I thought that is what the rule was designed to prevent-- clamboring up the pile to block the kick. Anyone remember when the Chiefs had that 6' 10" TE Morris Stroud who used to "guard" the goal post and try to defend against low-crossing field goal attempts. I believe that they made a rule against that at some point. I think Stroud ended up with the Oilers for awhile.
Yeah, but that's no what happened. Rice jumped on by himself to try to block the field goal and he barely landed on his teamates back. It had no affect on his ability to block the kick. I think the rule book also stated something about taking a running start which he did do.
It gave him an extra second or two of "hang time" It's to prevent people from not only climbing up, but hanging up there so if they time their jump wrong they still have a chance to block the kick.
I bet the Colts and went to bed angry and pissed when it was 35-14... what a pleasant surprise I got when I came into work today! It's about time I caught a break this season!
Um, that doesn't change the fact it gave TB a second chance and could have potentially cost IND the game. Which it ALMOST did. Automatica has range.. if one of those passes had been caught on one of those free downs, you're looking at a Tampa win. Plus, Rice actually did break a rule. Rhodes, however, did not.
I changed the channel, after Manning's interception for a TD...I was watching ESPNEWS and the game got closer and closer so I changed it back and saw them tie it...Unbelievable...The best game I've seen in a long time...
That's not what I saw. It looked to me like he landed on one of his lineman on the way down when he was well below the apex of his jump. No way was he up there for 1-2 extra seconds. I think players used to use their teammates as launch pads. That should be disallowed but that is not at all what Rice did and that is what the rule should be preventing. I think it is just a poorly worded rule. How come Randy Moss can run as fast and jump as high as he wants to snare a TD pass but defenders can't go after a field goal attempt with all their athletic ability? Punt blockers are only restricted by their inability to touch the punter.
I don't feel like reading through this whole post, so maybe this was discussed. But, does this loss ease the pain of former Oilers fans like myself? Which is worse (historicaly)? 1. Oilers 32 point choke job in BUF (playoffs) 2. TB's choke job (touted as one of the top 5 defenses of ALL TIME) to Indianapolis, by giving up 21 points in the FINAL 4 MINUTES. I think the latter is worse, seeing as how highly ranked TB's defense was, and how Indy came back in 4 minutes, rather than an entire half, like Houston's choke. But of course Houston's choke took place in the playoffs, not week 5. But TB's choke was on national television, when the whole country was watching. Your thoughts?
