I disagree in relation to the Texans' situation. You're 0-for-2 on coaching hires; they've proven to not be very good at this. Oh, sure. Coaches relinquish responsibilities all the time. But I'm not sure there's ever been a situation quite like this, where you have an elite offense and a historically bad defense. Normally, not always - but a lot of the time - when a regime fails, it fails across the board: nothing is working and a change makes too much sense. Here, though - again, I'm not arguing for it but I could see where a Marv Lewis and a competent GM could actually be the difference. I keep referencing the '93 Oilers, when they brought in Buddy Ryan. I'm not advocating for Kubiak to keep his job. I just think they *have* to upgrade the position if they're going to make a change. And as I've said all along, I think Kubiak, the GM, has been the far bigger failure.
I think people here are being too pessimistic about McNair. Kubiak is gone, Denver or no Denver. Unless they go with Cowher or Chucky, let the new GM hire the new coach.
Playoffs or bust and well...bust. Kubes has been given more then a fair shot and has not produced at the level most, if not all, successful coaches have produced. I'd go for a Cowher/Gruden type but, I will say, my plan "B" is to neuter the fool. Bring in a new GM with power and give the defense to a Marvin Lewis/Ron Rivera type coach while allowing Kubes the keep the offense and head coaching duties.
Yeah, 8-8 is good enough for a ticket out of town imo. And as for the lockout, paying coaches, etc, hey the Broncos are gonna be paying 3 coaches.
I'd agree that these are the only two acceptable ways to go. If you have a shot at Cowher, liquidate them all and lock him up. If not, bring in a serious President/GM and Kubiak and his O-staff alone get a one year probation.
Bob will say, "We were a couple of plays away from a playoff birth and this is the coach who brought us here. Kubiak is a fantastic coach for this team"
Lockout + 7-9 or better and Kubes stays. No lockout + 6-10 or worse and Kubes goes. Bush is gone either way, Smith is on the bubble, but will likely stay. I think if Smith goes, Kubiak will probably want to bail anyway.
I think he should have been fired by now, but when you have an owner like McNair who doesn't give a crap about his team I can definitely see Kubiak coming back next season.
Agreed. I think the Texans will beat Tennessee and Denver, and lose to Jacksonville to end the season. I expect Jacksonville and Indy to still be competing, and Jacksonville to not have the division wrapped up by the final game.
Not THIS 8-8. Not when for the 3rd year in a row the team is below .500 on games that are easily winnable without all the coaching gaffes.
Is there a way to keep the zone scheme and basically the same Offense without having Kubiak? I would rather have Kyle Shanahan as our head coach.
I agree with your points but would like to emphasize that the most important thing for the Texans next year is to hire an experienced, competent and independent DC (which is your #2 option, more or less). Kubiak has shown that he can get his OC and offense to produce results. On the defensive side, Kubiak has shown that he can not. I do not see this changing. And I do not trust Kubiak to pick the next DC. Some teams field a "President of Football Operations" position. Maybe the Texans can hire a "Parcells" and let him pick the new DC and defensive coaching staff and make Kubiak live with it. Of course, hiring Bill Cowher would fix the offense and defense at once.
