The more outlandish the idea/thread, the easier it is to remember.

We'll be quoting this one 3 years from now. :)

Let's start with Mexico. It will solve more pressing issues for us and them.

I love right angle thinking like this. Questions like this aren't intended to be fully fleshed out proposals. What they do do is throw your thinking for a loop, and get you thinking about the problem from another direction. The trick is to think specifically about why the proposal won't work, and to then think about what a better proposal would be.

In this case I don't think this would work for several reasons. First, no one in the region wants the US there, and it wouldn't be very hard for any of the countries in the region to send in covert operations units to continue bombing and attacking American troops. And I don't think there is anything the US could do to stop it. I don't think the US has enough troops, or money, or political will to accept the losses (nor should they have), to secure Iraq, given all the people who don't want the US there. Secondly, the Iraqis might support this if it game them US citizenship, but as soon as it went through half of Iraq might well move to the US, because that's the only way they would get the benefits of being a US citizen. That could create chaos both in Iraq and to some extent in the US as well.

The root of this idea, it seems to me, is that a larger and more powerful entity might help stabilize Iraq. I don't think the US could do it, but could some other power block do it? The UN might be able to, but I also wonder if the people of the ME are sick enough of war to form their own regional piece keeping force. Even with the US gone Iraqi oil will still attract a lot of attention from its neighbors, and then there is the Suni Shia issue, and the Kurds, and Al Qaeda ... I wonder if there is enough will in the region now for the different countries to get together and form a peace keeping force for their mutual benefit? I hope Obama sits down with them and discusses something along these lines which would allow the US to hand over the policing duties in Iraq to such a unit. I think it would be a great next step for them to be able to step up and take care of their own regional issues.

Only after we bombed the crap out of them, dismantled their goverment and military, destabilized their country and are still kind of refusing to leave after five years.
