That what I believe people will want to protest against. This election might or might not be rigged. But the general people are really unhappy with the Iranian goverment. And the protest is generally pointed against the regime.

Rumors of a Rafsanjani resignation floating around.

To give you an understanding of what's going on, the following is blocked in Tehran (at least) at the moment:

    - Facebook
    - Youtube
    - Twitter
    - International press
    - All reformist websites and newspapers
    - Headquarters of all election "losers"

I've heard the entire internet is down, but don't believe that one.

I served in the military there, that wont happen... the iranian military is nicely packed, they have two main folds, the Imperial guard who have better equipment, better training and are fanatically loyal to the Mullahs and the ordinary military, its a safe guard measure that they are using with perfection.

its like the immortal guard of the ancient persians.

you mean the military? the shah ordered them to stand down. it was jimmy carter's meddling that made the shah fall down, if I could hit him in the face for indirectly blinding my eye, I would.

They didnt overthrow the Shah. The Shah just left when he realized he was hopeless. Also, the Mullahs were looking great at that point offering free oil and healthcare and loans etc. What they offered was actually terriffic. What ensued was completely unexpected.

what they offered was too good to be true, everything has a price, the revolution was purely islamic, the tudeh party helped a lot as well.

the reality is that the shah had a lot of chances to counter this, the military was loyal to him, if he said so, 10,000 people would be dead and the protests would be over. I still remember that when he was king, the streets were safe, the prices were down, you could hold your girlfriend's hand, a woman can reach a rank higher than that of a man, religion freedom was ten times better.

the shah did a lot of mistakes, plus he was ailing that time.

I meant the revolution wasnt purely islamic, even the democratic foundations that time were against the shah. the shah was a great man but he made a lot of mistakes... Id rather have him than any of these clowns.

Maybe we can just send over the US army, they are already in Iraq, they can just shoot the Mullahs and Ahmadinejad, and you guys can start over.

    How does that sound?

    ;)

not sure if that would work, during the war, I am a Pro Shah by the way, a lot of us were of different ideologies but we banded together when we were attacked by iraq, I served with communists, liberals, professors of history and ethics and in some instances fanatics. truth be told that might have a worse effect for it might make the Mullahs have a stronger resolve that it is a culture war.

best way, use the same tactics jimmy carter did or use the queen sacrifice move.

I am listening to a certain persian news media on the internet. One caller to the news studio mentioned that in her city (Karaj) there has been a declaration of martial law of sort. They wont let people out of their houses and have closed all businesses and schools. I'm not sure how legit this caller is but it is interesting.

Even if this is rigged, the only way for anything to change in terms of who is president this time around is a complete coup.

3:49 update: Stratfor is reporting that Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council, has resigned.

Though unconfirmed, the report is saying that Rafsanjani is resigning from his position as head of the Expediencey Council, NOT his position as the leader of the Assembly of Experts, which has oversight responsibility over the office of the Supreme Leader and would be responsible for naming Ayatollah Khamenei’s successor.

3:18 update: The President of the Committee of Election Monitoring: The Election is Cancelled

<blockquote>Hojjat-ol-Eslam Yali Akbar MohteshamiPour officially requested that the Guardian Council to cancel this election and schedule a new election balanced and moderated democratically with the widespread and national presence of the people.</blockquote>

Conflicting reports, now, about Mousavi’s reported arrest.

3:05 update: According to Mousavi’s website, a group of employees in the Ministry of the Interior in an open letter warned that the votes have been changed and manipulated in the state election commission. In this letter, which was addressed to the chairman of the Assembly of Experts, the President, the of Majlis of Iran, the heads of the legislative and judicial branch and several other government agencies, a group of employees stated that “as dedicated employees of the Interior Ministry, with experience in management and supervision of several elections such as the elections of Khamenei, Rafsanjani and Khatami, we announce that we fear the 10th presidential elections were not healthy.”

Full letter is available here in Farsi: http://mowj.ir/ShowNews.php?7217

2:35 update: Tehranbureau is reporting 50-100 dead, as midnight nears in Iran.

Readers’ comments from Mousavi’s website, http://mowj.ir/ShowNews.php?7210:

    [rquoter]
Saeed: We will never forget this tragedy. Shame on you Ahmadinejad…Shame.

Aref: This is not over yet. Tell people who voted for Mousavi to come to the streets on Saturday so we can show how many votes Mousavi has. If Mousavi and Karoubi keep their word, they should participate in the protests as well.

Amin: This is the world’s biggest dictatorship. I will never vote again.

    [/rquoter]

    [/rquoter]

    So...

Mousavi has been arrested... all sorts of government officials and even mullahs comming out and saying the election was fixed (with various degrees of directness) and calling for nullification or a 'do-over'... general mayhem in the leadership...

As I stated earlier, I was open and willing to listen to evidence that the election was fair. At this point, I'm having a really hard time not believing it was fixed.

More excelent first hand and second hand stuff here.

There shouldn't be a doubt in anyone's mind that this election was rigged.
That's how elections in Iran have been for quite some time.
