    Deckard... Vinsanity...

You two are acting like I'm tarnishing the people that live there... I'm only talking about the supreme leaders and the govt... the dictators that each of those countries have had... they deserve better... but these governments/dictators/supreme leaders/presidents have all caused problems over the last few decades. I think I went overboard when I said we should nuke them, but something has to be done about making those countries more like our country in terms of the power belongs to the people... (in some countries it may be like that, though it's not like they really get to use the power because of abuse of power from the govt.)

Nope. Western countries have occupied and destabilized it since the beginning of the twentieth century for the sake of colonialism, mineral exploitation and to make up for two millenia of cultural anti-Semitism. In response to our aggression and collusion with corrupt despots, impoverished and overmatched Arabs, Persians and others did what Obama says people do: "turn to guns and religion."

    Iran bans election protest footballers

Their gesture attracted worldwide comment and drew the attention of football fans to Iran's political turmoil. Now the country's authorities have taken revenge by imposing life bans on players who sported green wristbands in a recent World Cup match in protest against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election.

According to the pro-government newspaper Iran, four players – Ali Karimi, 31, Mehdi Mahdavikia, 32, Hosein Ka'abi, 24 and Vahid Hashemian, 32 – have been "retired" from the sport after their gesture in last Wednesday's match against South Korea in Seoul.

Wake up dude! The whole freaking world has been fighting and killing and seeking to dominate each other for centuries. Nothing has ever changed, and the Middle East is no more unique than any other place on earth. Perhaps they have been fighting longer since they have older civilizations and the Mediterranean has been the center of power for the most part of the last 2000 years of human history, but it is not because they are more war like or we are more peaceful. The only thing that ever changes is the balance of power, and the pendulum will keep swinging.

the difference is that all those wars were fought with [for the most part] different countries and blocs, instead of having grudge matches between the same religious sects over and over. A lot of the wars you listed are not much more than skirmishes, even.

So fighting with different countries and in different blocs is better?

Its like saying smoking weed, snorting coke, and taking extacy is better than doing heroine while drunk.

    I agree with this.....totally agree...

The point was made to the guy who said that the western culture and colonization was the cause of the middle east fighting.

It may be one symptom, but it is not the entire virus.

I was listening to NPR and NBC news this morning and they are saying that while the protests are still going on it seems like that most of the protests are much smaller and more along the lines of acts of frustration towards the regime than a movement.

For those of you monitoring the situation closely does that seem to be the case and if does this mean the regime is winning?

the regime may hold the fort in the short term but ultimately the islamic revolution is seeing the beginning of the end. the military seems to have more power than the clerics now. stay tuned.

People also should remember that the 1979 revolution lasted nearly two years. We're all kind of expecting resolution here in days or weeks, but this could drag out.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Revolution

The first major demonstrations against the Shah began in January 1978.[8] Between August and December 1978 strikes and demonstrations paralyzed the country. The shah left Iran for exile in mid-January 1979, and two weeks later Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran to a greeting by several million Iranians.[9] The royal regime collapsed shortly after on February 11 when guerrillas and rebel troops overwhelmed troops loyal to the Shah in armed street fighting. Iran voted by national referendum to become an Islamic Republic on April 1, 1979,[10] and to approve a new theocratic constitution whereby Khomeini became Supreme Leader of the country, in December 1979.
