If she becomes a rallying point and they topple that horrid regime then great, if not, she will have died in vain.

    Very sad.

. . and what if they want to be in power. . . .
and just say they want the freedom . . .what will we do?

This is a very prickly situation
    tragic and a powder keg

Taking down Saddam was on thing
but taking down a duly elected official
[even if we think the elections were a farce]
    is another.

At this point . . . i have no idea of a solution
QUESTION: If the mullahs have the power
how much does it matter who the figure head is?

 Seriously. Obama has no clue what leadership means. Going out for ice cream at a time like now? You've got to be kidding me.

It's to the point now that if the protesters prevail, the "supreme ruler" and the mullahs will no longer be in control. The Islamic Republic has been discredited in the eyes of the people in Iran and dealt a fatal blow. It will collapse eventually, though not likely soon. Only Ahmadinejad remains a figure-head. If Mousavi ends up as president, he obviously will not be beholden to the mullahs he has now openly defied.

    That is why it matters.

the great thing about martyrdom is that it's not a one-shot deal. the story remains for future generations.

The problem is that people forget, it is an overused term, tons of peole are alleged martyrs...but in reality, if nothing changes they died in vain.....

Just a cruel case of a fake Republic killing it's citizens.

The Mullah are completely the issue, they are not elected, they have no real power if the people choose not to follow them....they are worse than Saddam Hussein was.....

This is terrible for the good people of Iran...simply horrendous.....It is just too bad that the army or someone is not willing to stand up to the Mullahs and hold them accountable...a nice public execution would do wonders.

This reminds me a lot of the situation in Thailand. They aren't exactly the same, and I don't know how much support Ahmadinejad actually has, but some experts seem to think that he might actually have the majority of the vote despite the polling irregularities. What the Iranian government is doing to its own people is terrible, but just because the supporters of the party that is out of power now is making the most noise, doesn't mean they have the majority.

What has happened in Thailand: The ruling, democratically elected Thai Rak Thai party was overthrown in a coup in 2006, ex Prime Minister Thaksin was found guilty by the courts of corruption and the party was banned. They reorganised into a new party, the PPP (whose supporters wear red shirts) and won the 2007 election due to popular support in the rural areas. Various members of the PPP were accused of corruption by the opposition, and large protests were held in Bangkok (the yellow shirts). You may remember the siege of Bangkok's airport in November 2008 that stopped flights incoming and outgoing flights. Eventually a court ruling in December dissolved the PPP and stripped the political rights of its executives for 5 years, the opposition came into power and having achieved their goals, the protests by the yellow shirts stopped. In 2009, unhappy that their party got ousted, this time the red shirts started protesting. A lot of them came from the country areas to Bangkok to protest, but the new government used force against them (stronger than the previous government had used against the yellow shirt protesters) and put down the protests.

Ruling government accused of voter fraud, protests by people in urban areas challenging the vote - sound familiar? The party that got less votes in the election is now in charge of Thailand. Without fully understanding what's going on in Iran, I wouldn't be so quick to call for Ahmadinejad's removal.

    Seriously.

How can you go get ice cream??? I mean, people are dying in iran. People are dying everywhere actually. I mean, people die everyday and every hour. A president should not have ice cream or anything nice or relax for a single moment of a day for 4 years.

I mean, look, how can Obama go get ice cream???? What does he think? At least bush had the tact to go to crawford and BBQ. But ice cream?

    Give me a break!

Lucky for us it was just ice cream. If it had been creme brulee, the tiny tent crazies would have called him an out of touch elitist for daring to have a pansy ass French sounding desert at such a serious time.

you're blinded by your partisan love affair with Obama

He easily could have chosen his ice cream photo op to be at a later date. At best it just shows his ignorance, at worse, his flippancy to public perception.

Another rumor, the Army based in Kermanshah province is experiencing divisions with some of the leadership backing the people rather than the government.
