Interestingly, if there's ever been a demonstration of the value of words and diplomacy, this may just be it. Iranians elected a reformer in the 1990s. Soon after Bush labeled them in the Axis of Evil, the hardliners recaptured both the Presidency and the Parliament. Then you have Obama being more amicable to them, and it looks like you might have a reformer again.

It seems to me that the Iranian people want to moderate, but when you treat them like hated enemies, they will react that way - the same we do when someone accuses us of being evil. That's not to say a reformer President is a solution to our problems given his limited power, but it's certainly better than the alternative which only escalated things more.

You certainly would think electing a more open-minded, moderate leader would help relations with Iran at least somewhat.

I thought 'ejad was already in power, and what were the changes in Parliament afterwards?

Either way you are correct that better leadership means enhanced ability to measure words and actions.

Ahmadinejad actually won his first election in 2005, which was the first election after Bush's axis of evil speech (2002) - it does seem like he's been in power much longer, though. Oddly, in 2004 when we had Bush v. Kerry, he wasn't even on the scene yet.

According to that BBC Primer, the hardliners won control of parliament in 2004 after the reformists had won in 2000 - though it implies the 2004 results may be a result of a lot of reformist candidates being banned.

According to the BBC, Mousavi is claiming victory.

Got a feeling this will make the Coleman/Franken battle look petty when all is said and done.

The reformer won the popular vote, but Ejad won the electoral vote so 'ejad wins. ;)

I'm betting that it will be close enough that no matter who 'wins' there will be a runoff election next week.

Unbelievable that any person who can deny the Holocaust happened could be president of any country in the first place. The evidence is insdisputable and undeniable. I take it to mean such a person is not a fair person to be dealt with. Does the Supreme Leader believe that as well? I guess it is related to blind hatred of another group of people due to differences. Or, just being a complete idiot.

Right, the guy trying to oust Ah'manutjob will be "runoff" even though he probably has more votes.

In his defense, W, "HE LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU!"

CNN is saying 69% for Ahmad and 28% for Mouissavi.

If that is anywhere close to being true, then it looks like the Joker got re-elected.
