The US recognized Venezuala's election. Both the last presidential election and the referendum on the change of Venezuala's constitution.

[rquoter]Caracas, Venezuela, December 6, 2006 (Venezuelanalysis.com) - The US government implicitly acknowledged the legitimacy of Venezuela’s December 3rd presidential election on Monday, where Hugo Chávez comfortably retained his position as president for the next 6 years.

After Chávez’ victory had been confirmed, White House National Security Council spokesperson Kate Starr made an official statement. “We congratulate the Venezuelan people for demonstrating their commitment to a democratic process”, she said.[/rquoter]

[rquoter]The U.S. delegation found that the voting in Venezuela’s 2009 referendum was, overall, fair, transparent, and clean. While there were a few instances of technical problems, we were impressed by the efficiency and simplicity with which Venezuelan voters were able to express their preferences. We often found ourselves wishing that elections in the United States were conducted with such uniform professionalism and care, and that the election results could be tallied as quickly. Our observations of Venezuelan popular democracy in action stand in marked contrast with media depictions of Venezuela’s government as autocratic.[/rquoter]

And did that lead to any changes in Iran?

As for the bringing freedom to 50 million muslims that is still up in the air right now given recent events in Afghanistan.

Oh they certainly did. They likely made the regime even more hostile to the US and hostile to change.

The difference between the Obama approach and the Bush approach is that the former still has a chance of success while the latter failed miserably.

Sure but not in the ways of making them more friendly to the West, more open or more democractic.

    Obama's Words From Iran

I'm an Iranian living in Canada. A few hours ago I talked to my brother who is a student at Sharif University, he was at the big rally yesterday and they were only feet away from Karoubi when they marched from the university entrance to Azadi square. He asked what had Obama had said and I started reading the transcript. When I got to "the United States can be a handy political football, or discussions with the United States [can be]" my brother sighed and said thank God this guy gets it.

The US's actions in Iraq have weakened its position in respect to Iran. In case you already forget, that's the context you were referring to.

I'm sure they appreciated the US actions making Iran's leadership more and more hardline. They'll appreciate much more a US leader who's actions might actually be aimed at helping make their lives better, rather than sounding good.

Lakecharles posted the exact same article and I posted another article that explained why that those poll results were misleading.

Heres the link if you missed it.

The link is also at the bottom of the article you posted.

Yes. Very much so. For starters, we've have an extra $1 trillion or more to work with and 130k extra troops available who are not busy trying to hold Iraq steady. Not to mention any of the extra political credibility we'd have and the additional support from the international community that would be on our side.
