In terms of testing European commitment though to free speech and freedom of the press this actually would be the right way to test it since I believe that a few European countries actually legally censor material that denies the Holocaust or praises Nazis. I'm pretty sure Iran doesn't have the same laws but the test would be if papers in those countries would print material like that even if it was produced in Iran.

Anyway though this probably has more to do with scapegoating Jews IMO two wrongs don't make a right. That said I don't think this would be a huge issue if the response from Iran and other Muslims had just been to make cartoons mocking the Holocausts and not burning embassies.

I believe that the election was generally considered open and Ahminedjad wasn't even the favorite the problem was that there were very few choices given since most of the reform candidates either chose not to run or were disqualified by Iran's electoral commission. The election itself might've been fair but the selection of candidates wasn't.

It's an endless cycle of childishness, isn't it?

You're right that a few European countries have special laws that ban anti-Semitic displays or speech, but not other ethnic or religious groups...Britain meanwhile has moved to ban what they call 'hate speech' that could lead to incitement. Under British law, these Danish cartoons could've been deemed 'hate speech', and some European leaders -- while denouncing the violence -- have also remarked that these cartoons are hateful and inciteful in nature.

The thing is, whether we acknowledge it or not, there are limits on free speech, and those limits are very much present in our society as well, and it's done to preserve a 'greater good', namely security. There are limits imposed on, for instance, on what could be said and shown on public airwaves. And several other limitations on free speech.

i believe it was 10-15% lower this cycle than last time khatami was up. and considerably more lower than the first time khatami won.

but im not sure about this.

A cartoon starts armageddon. who woulda thunk it? somewhere, another world is watching all this unfold and laughing at our stupidity, or shaking their head with pity, or perhaps they are high-fiving eachother and saying "see I told you we would get them to exterminate themselves by creating religion"

Two things will surely result from this:

    1) Jewish people will NOT burn Iranian flags, issue death threats, and start burning buildings.

    2) The Iranians will still have no real interest in free speech.

I dont see Hindus, Christians, or Jews doing any of this stuff. Maybe you should be slightly more selective
