This thing is going to crash and burn for the same reason touch screen remote controls never really caught on. People want buttons to push. When texting or dialing, they are not going to want to have to look at the screen to use it. You want to be able to "feel" a phone. It's going to be fun initially and then people will realize it's just not as useful as they might like. That's my prediction anyway.
i don't really want this as a phone but if they used this design/technology on a 30gb ipod, i'd be all over it. i'm assuming this will happen at some point fairly soon too.
As DoD mentioned, the selection of phones available overseas is 100x better than what is available in the US. A majority of Americans do not know this, which is why the iPhone will sell like hotcakes. I think it will be interesting to see how the touch screen will work out. Can you imagine what it would be like if your keyboard was some type of touchscreen where you couldn't feel each individual key? I too am skeptical about the whole touchscreen issue. It will be interesting how everything plays out.
But they weren't purposely stifiling supply. Apple isnt going all out with this right away. Keep supply semi-low for a while which should allow them to delay having to drop the price. It will happen at some point...just not as soon as the other phones that have come out. That is, of course, unless it is a monster failure.
Don't think so. Apple wants market share with the iPhone, not exclusivity. They have some very ambitious projections to meet that contradict your theory. In fact, some analysts say the iPhone will blow away Apple's projections. Purposely stifling supply is definitely not part of the plan though many feel demand will be overwhelming and therefore impossible for Apple to meet.
I'll be getting one eventually. For the price, the battery life and whether everything works as it should both worry me though.
Ironically not many people are complaining about the price. I wonder why.... I wouldn't spend $500 for a phone, a phone is a phone, I don't need it to do anything else. The most I'll ever spend is $200. That's the "sweet spot" for me. As others mentioned, the first generation Apple products are ok at best. If I was really interested in this, I would wait for the second or third generation before purchasing.
I'm more concerned about getting thumb prints and smudges on that cool lcd screen of the iPhone since you will be touching it for every function. Unless you have a case, it appears like it would scratch easy too.
bank accounts?? nah!! that's what mattresses are for!!! here's my phone....it's amazing. people call...the phone rings...i answer it...we talk...i hang up. oh, and i recorded the crowd reaction to the Astros winning the 18 inning game against the Braves on the Burke HR. that...and some pictures of my kids...and...yeah...i think that's MORE than i need in a freaking phone!!! for about $450 cheaper than this sleek piece of equipment. oh, and it fits in my pocket.
Dr of Dunk nailed it with his comments. apple products are a lifestyle choice more than anything else, no doubt about it. nobody will ever have a monopoly on innovation. once a great product comes out, competitors will follow with their own versions. my guess is that the iphone will be a huge success, there is tons of disposable income burning holes in people's pockets. i agree it's overpriced but i'll be getting one at some point.
I couldn't disagree more. I own a product called the Archos Media Player, it has an intuitive and sensitive touch screen interface. It is amazingly cool and easy to use. It even has a built in touch screen keyboard for internet browsing, works like a charm. It allows for a bigger screen too. Touch screens (when done right) are very effective. Go to Best Buy and play with an Archos. You might do a 180.
I would like one but I have a company issued blackberry and don't want to carry 2 big phones around. My personal cell needs to be small if I'm carrying 2 phones. All of that being said I'm on the list and my contract is up with Verizon so I just might get one down the line.
For internet browsing, I totally agree. It's for keypad based stuff that I think people will find they dislike it. I'm not saying I'm right about it - that's just my suspicion. And I haven't tried the Archos, so perhaps I'm totally wrong on this one. On a separate note, the no 3G thing is bizarre, except for the fact that Apple is great with getting people to buy stuff, then launching an upgrade 6 months later that people then re-buy. I suspect we will see a 3G version towards the end of the year, and many people that got the first one will go out and get the second one. It's a great way to pull more revenue from a single customer.
I had a ppc before and the iphone looks way better then anything out there by far. But it will never get past the fact that dialing without buttons sucks a$$. When your outside the sun makes it hard to dial. When your in the car it's impossible to dial. Touchscreen dialing sucks! Give me buttons any day of the week. I ditched my ppc for a crackberry and never looked back.
