That is true. CDMA doesn't allow you to do that. That's the beauty of LTE.
So, if you were surfing or using the internet on your Verizon iPhone, you wouldn't receive any calls/texts until you are done using data. With AT&T, Edge is the same way, but 3G lets you use data and voice simultaneously.

That's what I was getting with Sprint too. My highest upload was 822kbps.

Man, I love these phones now. I use my phone to stream movies from places like www.quicksilverscreen.com , or www.justin.tv/directory/entertainment more than I do actually talking on it.

That article is old. Recently the organization that determines what quantifies as "4G" expanded the definition to include HSPA+, so I guess it depends on your viewpoint, but the only thing consumers care about is speed. T-Mobile is technically offering 4G coverage though.

You know what's weird? On my Samsung Epic 4g (Sprint) if I'm on 4g and ONLY if I'm 4g, I can surf the web and talk simultaneously. I'm guessing it has something to do with the different frequency spectrum of Clearwire, which sucks btw.

Different type of connection. Verizon's implementation of 3G involves shutting of the data channel for the sake of voice.

2G/3G CDMA/EvDO networks like Verizon and Sprint are not capable of doing voice and data simultaneously. Everything is transmitted through on the same band so data connections are suspended while there is a voice call in progress. GSM UMTS/HSPA (AT&T, T-Mobile) does not have this limitation since it's not sharing the same band with voice calls.

In the future voice calling will be done over 4G IP networks so this limitation will finally end...but for now, if you're trying to switch to Verizon to get an iPhone, no, you will not be able to do voice and data simultaneously.

That's because there are two different radios on your phone - a 3G CDMA EvDO radio and a 4G WiMAX radio. If you're in a 4G coverage area then you get to use both radios at once. If you're not, then you can only do one at a time.

    Personally:

Happy to see iPhone is finally showing up on Verizon.....but I am going to pass for now.

Up for upgrade in June, and I'll obviously wait until after Apple's annual June announcement to see what they'll have. I doubt it will be a LTE/4G phone and I further doubt Verizon will see a substantially improved iPhone show up 4 months after the iPhone4 arrived. *Maybe* an iPhone4.5 announcement that goes on sale in Sept/Oct.

I'm going to keep an eye on Verizon's plan to kill New Every 2 and early Upgrade programs. With the speed we're going, being locked into a phone for 2 years will be borderline crazy to do. I may look more into a 1 yr contract.

The other card I have in the deck is that I made (in hindsight) a regrettable purchase of a Verizon netbook (HP Mini 311)...actually got it for my grandmother (for sending pictures) but have found that switching that out for a Digital Picture frame with mobile connectivity was a better option. And I'd far rather get a mobile hotspot phone/device that works with any computer than be stuck with this underpowered netbook running Win7. Where I'm going with this is....I'll be able to "upgrade" on that netbook line in August. Maybe I get a second phone that shares minutes, maybe I get a LTE modem, maybe Verizon gets a decent tablet (Xoom?).

I like my Droid right now. I'd prefer the best tech than the iPhone. I'm thinking the wife drops her blackberry for the iPhone and I grab one of the Tegra-powered phones in June (Bionic?).

Thanks. Guess I won't be switching the family over then.

This is NOT true. Voice & SMS always take priority over data, unless you specifically disable the 1xRTT radio on your phone. What happens is whenever you make or receive a call/SMS, your EvDO data connection is immediately interrupted until the call completes.

I don't the whole hoopla of surfing while on a call when you can't make calls in the first place on AT&T........

Exactly... so how is what I said anything different from what you said? You can't use the internet when you're using the phone.

EDIT: I guess I worded it backwards... but yeah... that's what I meant. You get phone calls/sms... but then your data goes out.
