I normally stay out of stuff like this, but I've got to say that you are amazing. Just unreal. I am a VERY cynical person in a lot of ways but you've lapped me several times.
Why would they want to leak it? You're saying the hype is gone... yet the majority of people who buy iPhones don't even follow tech. They're just everyday consumers who try out the phone themselves and if they like it, they buy it. Do you really think Apple is worried about HTC? They're blowing everyone out in terms of sales in smart phones...
The question is why is a top secret iPhone doing in a hand of a lowly software programmer? If like some of you have stated about how a strict company like Apple are with their products, what is it doing in the hand of a lowly programmer outside of work? We are talking about a programmer here and not a tech savvy person that need the iPhone to do a field test. Usually a field test are done in laps and in their cars. Usually there are only a few prototype are to go around chosen for their professional field to have it in their procession and I don't see how this guy got a hold of the iPhone 4G. What make this story even more lame is that it was on his birthday and blah blah blah. Seems to me they are trying to cover basic that this was make to look like an accident and that guy won't be fire because it was on his birthday and it was an accident.
No... I made a WWDC thread for the announcement of the iPhone. I said I would consider switching to Android, which I still am mulling over once the iPhone is announced. I don't think I'm the funny one in this thread though.
i don't see what's so crazy about Bebop's theory. i thought the same thing too when i first heard the story. it could go either way. just because apple is no. 1 in handheld devices doesn't mean they abandon all marketing schemes. nintendo still hypes their DS here in japan by limiting supplies to stores and forcing ppl to wait months with no ETA on new inventory. and it isn't like they need to. let's just say that this is premeditated. what has apple accomplished? everyone on the internet is talking about it. "normal ppl who will more than likely just walk into a store to try it out" will more than likely read it in the papers or hear about it at work. probably end up reading the articles and accidentally learn about the cool new features and upgrades to the 4g iphone. why is it so crazy to think that apple would be behind hyping their own product? the whole secrecy thing started b/c Jobs was scarred from Gates stealing the technology for Mac OS way back. this however is a finished product. release date is 2 months away?? is another company going to develop something eerily similar in 2 months? what's the use in arguing this anyway? not like anyone can prove their side. accident or not, this is a lot of free advertising for apple and i know i'm even more excited to see the new 4g b/c of this incident.
Apple has never rolled like that. They let people they trust test their stuff "in the wild" with the caveat of a STRICT non-disclosure agreement that basically says you agree they can take all your stuff and kill your dog if you leak. The guy was a software engineer that was working on the phone software. It is not surprising to me that he had a prototype of a new release and that it was disguised to look like an old one. When I worked at Apple there were offices you were not allowed to go into before you knocked so that they could cover up stuff on their desk. There are even special customers who are really tech savvy that Apple lets test things. Before the first iPod came out, Seal had one. He is a giant Apple nerd and knows more technical stuff than a fair amount of help desk level techs at Apple knew. Lastly, Steve announces stuff and wants the WOW factor there to be genuine every time. Below engineering, tech support guys NEVER got to see new products before they were released. On release days, we saw the products for the FIRST TIME when he was presenting it. Then we would get an email immediately after with tech specs and a FAQ for customers that were calling in. We wouldn't get to do a take apart until it was released.
Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Do No Evil: Steve Jobs on the Moral Superiority of Apple over Android by Kevin Krause on April 20th, 2010 Steve Jobs popped his head out of his turtle neck long enough to issue one of his prized responses to a customer’s e-mail last week, and he just couldn’t resist dropping his now-played-out attack on the p*rn-ridden, adult’s only, lock-up-your-children Android Market. Can’t we all just get along? I really wish Apple could drop the petty attacks and get back to letting their devices do the talking. Here is the e-mail exchange in question: Steve, I was converted to Apple products with the announcement of the iPhone 3G. (My friends have been trying to convince me for years.) Since then I’ve purchased 4 iPhones, 2 computers, several routers, and miscellaneous other items. Unfortunately, I’m really starting to have a philosophical issue with your company. It appears that more and more Apple is determining for it’s consumers what content they should be able to receive. For instance, the blocking of Mark Fiore’s comic app (due to being political satire) or blocking of what Apple considers to be p*rn. I’m all for keeping p*rn out of kids hands. Heck – I’m all for ensuring that I don’t have to see it unless I want to. But… that’s what parental controls are for. Put these types of apps into categories and allow them to be blocked by their parents should they want to. Apple’s role isn’t moral police – Apple’s role is to design and produce really cool gadgets that do what the consumer wants them to do. Thanks for listening -Matthew And Mr. Jobs’ response: Fiore’s app will be in the store shortly. That was a mistake. However, we do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep p*rn off the iPhone. Folks who want p*rn can buy and [sic] Android phone. You can’t dislike Apple for consistently pushing innovative products that create friendly competition and push advancements for other manufacturers as well. Without the original iPhone, Android would not be seeing the huge number of new, cutting-edge handsets that are currently coming to the market on almost every carrier imaginable. Their app store also paved the way for mobile development to be a viable business model. That is plain and simple, deal with it. But Apple has taken the competition from the smartphone marketplace to a world of ad hominem arguments. Feeling snubbed by old pal Eric Schmidt and backed into a corner where Android devices and apps are starting to compete head-to-head with the iPhone, Jobs has been flinging around the words ‘p*rn’ and ‘Android’ without regard. Customers need to know that ANDROID is synonymous with p*rn and that by limiting the consumer’s choice in handset and apps, Apple is freeing the cell phone market from ethical peril. He is making it his personal responsibility to be a source of moral guidance, taking Google’s supposedly “bull****” mantra of “Don’t be Evil” and rebranding it for his iPhone’s app store. Yeah, maybe Google didn’t mean it that way, but Apple is here to let you know they are making it simple to avoid all the rape, incest, and sodomy plaguing the Android Market. Hear no evil, see no evil, do no evil: all you need to do is buy an iPhone and Apple promises they will eliminate those pesky things called choice and temptation that would otherwise make it unavoidable to infest your mobile device with smut. I just want to know why anyone would think Apple wants to hype their product by losing the phone on purpose. The majority of buyers of the iPhone don't even pay attention to tech news and probably don't even know about the leak. They've never done it before, why would they do it now? I mean these are just logical questions...
well, how many people do not know of or use the internet? if you're on the internet then you will probably stumble upon the latest gossip. and if you're not aware. then chances are someone you know is aware and you will hear from them. and if you don't use the internet or can't afford to then you probably shouldn't be blowing your cash on a smart phone. it really isn't that illogical. the identity of the person who found the phone was left anonymous. apple is a parent to a myriad of puppet companies. they use them to submit patents without having it traced back to apple easily. it isn't that outrageous that possibly they could have sent one of their own to the media to claim that they "found" a 4g in a bar. and the phone wasn't even functional for gizmodo to leak anything that hasn't already been leaked. do we really know any more than we did before? no. we mostly just have confirmations of what was already speculated. and a sneak peak at how they made the logic board smaller but they didnt bother removing the heatsinks and covers to reveal the processor and didnt give any more info than apple would allow. the big deal is the OS anyway right? i choo choo choose macs and apple products because of the software. and apple really is a software company. Jobs has stated this over and over again. and there is no leak of anything new about OS 4. i mean im not saying that it is definitely a marketing ploy or definitely a screw up from one of their employees. im just saying that there's no need to get all huffy puffy about ppl thinking it's was premeditated.
Personally? Not often but... VNC + iPhone + computer = whatever you want to watch Slingblade + iPhone = streaming TV, whatever you want to watch Can you control your computer with your Android? I don't know or care... I'm happy with my iPhone that does more than I ever hoped a phone would.
u know one thing there's floating around among the common people is there's some new 4G iphone coming. i am talking about the everyday people who bought it to look cool. now i am not sure if they mean 4G is newer than 3G in terms of model numbers or they actually mean the 4G network. now i am sure there will be all sorts of confusion if apple calls it the 4G iphone (for 4th gen?) but it's still 3g.
Yes you can. Also, I'm actually writing this using my g1s as a wireless modem on my laptop. I just wanted to see how it works. I'm impressed ha. It is so hard to get myself to get anything new when next week something better will be out...
