Is this the norm in the N.B.A. that a gm will do trades without the input of the coach? Or could McHale have already told the gm what he would be interested in trading for? I find it hard to believe that McHale was out of the loop up until an hour before gametime.

I don't find it hard to believe. A lot of coaches want to be out of the loop on that stuff. They just want to coach these players in front of them and not worry about anything else.
