So Ariza is better than Derrick Rose?

no the chart shows that rose scores more points per shot than ariza and has taken more overall shots

the only one that surprised me is dwight howard, i would believe he would have been over 1 point per shot and not below it

also if maggette played more i would believe he would be further down. the guy is often injured, has a bad contract and is not getting any younger do not want him

The x-axis does not correspond to shots. I believe they are defining "offensive possessions" as shots+turnovers or:

    FGA + .44*FTA + TOV

Howard's high turnover rate sinks his PPP.

durvasa, thanks for the chart, good stuff. who are the top and bottom outliers on your chart or do you not have the names associated with the data points (at 77/18.5 and 121/34 respectively)? just kinda curious...thanks again

Is Maggette's style conducive to winning? History suggests that it's not.

Also, the shelf life of a wing is different than other positions. We might as well have gotten SJax if we wanted to take on a player of that age with a contract that ends in 2013.

    Thanks.

I'm surprised Battier has a better efficiency than AB. Landry is expected, Lowry I thought would be close because of those FTs.

So it's safe to say ARIZA SUCKS A#@... Stop feeding him the ball because obviously he such an efficient scorer no matter how many attempts he has.. Please someone e-mail these charts to Ariza..

And for people to say we have no other offensive options on the team... I would rather give it to Lowry,AB,Scola, Hell even Chuck Hayes and David Anderson.. God I hate Ariza so much.

Offensive efficiency takes into account offensive rebounds and turnovers, which gives Battier an advantage. But Battier's usage is extremely low, which forces his teammates to have to do more, thus potentially lowering their efficiency. And, similarly, Brooks' relatively high usage allows his teammates to settle into lower-usage, higher-efficiency roles.

The top would be LeBron, of course. I believe that bottom is Sasha Pavlovic, who's been just awful this year.

Thats a much better chart. Basically says what we all know to be true. More Lowry and Landry, less Ariza.

Would you mind redoing this and showing where Caron Butler, Andre Iguodala, and Kevin Martin are?

Also it would be interesting to see where Dalembert and Haywood show up.

I can give you their coordinates (this is just straight off of basketball-reference):

    Caron Butler (21.9, 101)
    Andre Iguodala (21.6, 108)
    Kevin Martin (25.3, 112)
    Dalembert (14.2, 109)
    Haywood (13.2, 118)

How did they determine who the top 50 players are?

Top 50 in "offensive possessions". I think they basically just took the season totals of:

    FGA + 0.44*FTA + TOV

That's why I like Battier. He's smart. He knows he kind of sucks, and would really suck if he tried to do anything outside of his comfort zone. So he minimizes what he tries to do, and is great at what little he does. This is all offensively speaking of course.

    He's the anti-Ariza.

Its the great usage vs efficiency debate -- Ariza is high-usage, low-efficiency, while Battier is high-efficiency, low-usage.

The flip side of the argument:

By limiting himself in such an extreme way, Battier puts more of a burden on his teammates. He may say, "Well, they are better at it anyway." Ok, sure, but if the other team knows that you're not going to be a threat that makes it much easier for them to guard the other players.

But we do know the best players are higher up on usage, Kobe, DWade, Lebron. And we all know if Battier's usage were increased, his efficiency would decrease.
