Sorry if this is takng away from your point which overall I agree with. I'm just pretty sure I'm not close to the only one thinking Diaz has a special bat. FanGraphs had him on their honorable mentions in their trade value series. I doubt they would have had him there if they thought he was just a Chas McCormick level bat (career not this year).
For the season Yainer is 147 wRC+ vs RHP and 29 wRC+ vs LHP. But since the all star break he is 184 wRC+ vs RHP and 56 wRC+ vs LHP. Dusty has made no accommodations for who is pitching when setting the lineup so that is not a factor. Yainer IS improving vs LHP ( and overall) with more playing time but is still TERRIBLE. If he does not take another step forward the next 6 weeks, then he should notcdtart vs LHP in the playoffs. Fortunately there aren't many. Rangers have Montgomery and Heaney (Perez won't start) Orioles have Irvin (who won't start) Both Rays lefties are injured and out. Blue Jays only have Kikuchi Twins have nobody Mariners have nobody. Diaz needs to start every game vs RHSP. This also shows exactly why the Astros desperately needed a bat to hit RHP at the deadline. Hopefully Singleton can be that guy.
Chas McCormick swinging at a fastball has the highest Run Value per plate appearance of any major league player against any pitch type with a minimum of 50 plate appearance. Altuve against fastballs is 4th in the league. In other words, if Baker ever benches Chas against a pitcher that throws mostly fastballs, we should mutiny. Seager and Freeman swinging at change ups are sandwiched in between. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/lead...on=undefined&team=&min=50&sort=3&sortDir=desc
OH not need to apologize at all, and thank you for doing the math. I fundamentally don't believe Yainer is a 1000 ops guy (which he's doing at catcher) because I fundamentally don't believe that of anyone until they've done it at least twice over the course of 1,000 ish AB's. So, like Yordan. Could he be a 900 OPS guy? Yeah. When I say 120 ops+ all I'm doing is being conservative. I'm really really excited about him and I actually was irritated at fan graphs for "only" having him honorable mention. I was one of the guys in the trade thread saying not ever for Robert straight up- which I think some people thought I was nuts for but which, if I could bet on such a thing, I would confidently do so.
Follow up to add- when I said Yainers true 120 OPS self I was referring to that as a rookie playing part time not some ceiling he had on him as well. I don't buy 1000 ops from him as a catcher. I also don't buy the 600 as a DH. Think it's inbetween but closer to the 1000 guy if I had to pick.
Yep. And guys typically can discover strike zone mastery as they age. yeah. That’s true too. But if you are going to go ahead and barrel 50% of your balls in play and you don’t swing and miss a ton, I guess that works?
Astros have three hitters in the Top 10 in wRC+ in high leverage situations Yordan Alvarez HOU .457/.512/1.086 wRC+ 315 Chas McCormick HOU .458/.533/.917 wRC+279 Kyle Tucker HOU .436/.521/.692 wRC+ 226 I will say, I thought that 0.917 was OPS at first instead of slugging for Chas.
He became unclutch since he added the gloves on June 13th with only .391 /.517/ .609 wRC+ 210 in high leverage situations.
Maybe but his overall numbers are better. That’s more important to me. Maybe he can wear the gloves the first 3 AB’s and go without gloves close and late his 4th or 5th time up.
Maybe he needs different gloves. Like they lose their grip a bit or get too sweaty by the 4th/5th at bats?
I love the zero f**karound Nomar Biggio crap. Get in, get set, go Your velcro is still exactly where it was 10 seconds ago.
