IMO, it gives too much incentive for just missing the playoffs (instead of getting in as the #8 seed and likely getting killed in round 1). You are basically guaranteed a #4 pick and have a shot to get #1. That chase for final playoff spots is actually fun, it's one of the things that keeps the end of regular season fun. Rather, give MOST of the teams a shot at #1, excluding ~top 8 or so (the really good teams). But make that shot progressively smaller the further you are from the "middle". E.g., 11th and 12th worst teams get 15% each, 10th and 13th - 12%, 9th and 14th - 9% each, 8th and 15th (the crappiest playoff team) - 7%, and when you get to the worst team and the 22nd (or so), they only get a fraction of a percentile point.
or this. i like it. it won't happen i suppose, because there's a number of scheduling and financial problems (does this mean longer season? if not, do you cut some games off regular season? if so, that's a steep financial punishment for the teams who don't take part in this "play-in" - those crappiest teams and (i assume) the very best teams who get straight playoff tickets). but it would be better than the current one from fan perspective.
The players didn't "tank" in badminton. They intentionally threw the game. Tanking is just getting rid of all our good players and starting over so we can get better. We aren't telling players to put half-hearted efforts and lose intentionally. we are just getting rid of our players that would make us win. We want our losers to play their hearts out and try to win. Absolutely. We just want to make sure they aren't good enough. Big difference.
Its not a good comparison ,in badminton there was no denying they where purposely trowing the match.<iframe width="640" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CsjDEGPIIZo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> starts at 00:37
It's never a good idea to start rookies off with a loosing mentality. Especially on purpose. This will only be a losing(if not mediocre again)for one season. After that, it's on.
Ultimately, sports is driven by fans buying tickets. So tanking by filling your team with young or crummy players is fine. This is because a fan buying a ticket can look at the roster before deciding whether to buy. But it is not ok for a team to tell its players to intentionally lose. This is because the ticket-buying fan is then not getting what's been paid for, namely an attempt by the players to play as well as they are capable of.
As a fan, i just don't see this as a tanking team as constructed. There are too many good young vets still on the team.
If we wasnt tanking we wouldve hired a real coach. If we get two top ten picks in next years draft and then hire a coach then im all for tanking.
