While it isn't helpful on CFs, that is what I like about high school girls. :)

pretty good analysis. But one point missing is that it goes from a more closed community that mostly rely on contributing members to a more open forum that partly rely on google ads - i.e. traffic. Popularity of the game has a huge part to do with it.

Really it's a tradeoff. I mean, the old days are nice, but GARM still has interesting stuff if I ignore predictable components.

Dude I was just a regular 99er like you, then something happened, everyone got dumber. Remember when we got Juwan Howard and all these people started talking about how great he was? a 17pt 7 rebound guy?

I was like, what the f$%$? Am I the only person on the freaking board who saw Juwan play with the Les Bullets, the Mavs and Orlando? Finally in the end, I was right, but why did I need to argue about it? This should be common knowledge.

I guess looking back, people not knowing Juwan was overrated and stunk was trivial compared today's GARM. Knowing the Rockets won 2 titles and being proud of it is taboo.

We have people commenting on the game when you know they didn't see it. they are straight up lying.

So am I creating this 'character of tinman' when I say "So what did you think when Yao got out rebounded by Len Bias?"
and the guy replies and tells me why Yao got out rebounded..

I also get accused of all types of crap, racism toward Yao fans etc.
Hey, I'm the ONLY CLUTCHFAN USA SUPERSTAR to meet any CLUTCHFAN IN FREAKING CHINA.

Somehow people have blamed me for the Yao hate, even though you know I never started this and you know I really like Yao. Now I'm the voice of the anti-McGrady movement. I didn't start that either. I'm 'dividing the fans', oh really? i'm just a 99er. I'm just C3PO. but the Ewoks think I'm their god.

You want to know what happened to the American Dream?... It happened

Why would I care about that?

its about getting your point across despite the popular or unpopularity of it.

Look at AntiSonic, people were dogging him for his opinion on a certain subject.
but then again, if any guy in the funny papers writes his honest opinion about the Rockets, he gets slammed too.

my $0.02:

at first, i thought a solution for the GARM quality would be to split it into a separate forum for each year of registration. for example, GARM 1999, GARM 2000, etc. obviously, you'd only be able to post in forums for the year you registered and later. this would allow posters to choose how selective they wanted their threads to be.

then i imagined having to peruse all those different forums, and realized i'd probably only spend time in a couple.

probably been suggested before, but then it occured to me that providing filters might be the way to go. you could choose the age range of posters whose threads/posts would be displayed for you. basically, as in the real world, you would choose to hang out with people of ages you're comfortable having discussions with. kind of mass ignore list.

alternatively, filters based on the date of registration. but i like the poster's age filter idea better.

stickied threads would be visible regardless of filters.

just a thought.

I can't help but think we're about to resort to Neo-McCarthyism.

moestavern19, I've read that you were once employed by a man who's father once spoke good things about Karl Malone. And you haven't exactly pronounced your hate for Deron Williams every day. So look me in the eyes and answer me honestly: Are you, or have you ever been a Jazz fan?

It isn't Elitist if everybody gets to go to Training Camp and they are told that they will need to play at a certain level to stay in the League. Those that lack the skills to stay can be sent to the Developmental League to work on their game.

i agree that the world of sports parallels the military in many ways, but is that the way we really want to go here? who will be the judge/jury? i doubt clutch or anyone else really wants to deal with something like that. anyway, as a "99er" yourself, would you say tinman should be sent to the d league?

Date of registration and age shouldn't be an absolute qualifier. There are 20 year olds on here that probably could have a more intelligent basketball discussion and have better arguments than 30-40 year olds. :D

I wish there were a "Digg" like feature for the threads on the board, where we could dig up or dig down dumb threads. I think it'd help a lot in the GARM.

If you're talking about making a filter, then, not "absolutely". For example, I can be an idiot posting stupid responses. I contribute to the tip jar and I could end up being a contributing member idiot posting stupid responses. :D

There's no one way to determine any of this. It's subjective and full of variables.

Look at some of the threads that get voted 1 star in there - they're articles from the Chronicle. Instead of arguing the merits of the thread, its value, or abstaining, people vote on how much they like the news or the person posting. It quickly becomes a popularity contest. A couple of years ago a thread about what Yao had for breakfast would've gotten 5 stars and a thread arguing Yao's weaknesses in the post would've gotten 1. That's not exactly impartial.

I would suggest that only the Clutch Crew should be able to rate threads. It would likely be more objective and accurate, and I think it would also compel posters to create more high quality threads if they knew that they would be essentially "graded" by the board's authorities. I think people would be more embarrassed if they knew you or Clutch was giving them 1-star rather than if 50 unknown people were doing it. I know I would.
