Agreed a number system would be much better.

Leveling up bars can work, see WoW, and Everquest, but you need to see where you are in relation to your next level, and how far along you are progressing.

In other words, more work for Clutch.....which again....I am not in favor of, but if you are going to do it:

A nebulous Green dot does not tell the user where they are, how much to the next level, and are they actually progressing (IE making quality posts) which is entirely the point, right?

So if you are not going to do a full system, numbers are a cheap and easy alternative....again...less work.

You could even have a two layers system, with a Level number, and then a bar that moves up as you get rep points....which gives more feedback to the posters...which is the point of this, I think.

I think veteran members should get rep boost and that feedback should be limited to contributing members.

I think we should also have it to where you reach the highest rank/level you could be rewarded with The Sword of a Thousand Truths.

Actually Clutch, I just realized that BlameTracy was the one who started that flowchart thread, whereas Blame_Tracy is the kid who got banned for starting a stupid thread about Spurstalk.

    Two different posters.

    Makes sense now.

have you noticed that the monikers are becoming more unoriginal?

there's only one dude named moestavern, or antisonic, or dadakota

The only way I can think of to give more credit to veteran posters going forward is by giving their rep'd postings a higher weighting from here on, by adding a base value from the start and rep them normally thereafter, or combining both. For example, something like :

if (they've been around since xxxx AND they have more than xxxx posts) then
    rep = rep + 1.2(normal rep addition)
    else
rep = rep + (normal rep addition)

You can give them a higher base rep value if you want them to get a bit of a head start as well. Maybe update their rep count based upon whatever qualifier you choose and then start adding normally.

My initial response is "no, they shouldn't be allowed to rep", but I don't know how this would affect the usefulness of the rep system - for example, what's the ratio of members to non-members who post and vote? I don't know.

Instead of an elite forum, make a scrub forum for a class below rookies. They can make unlimited threads or posts as they want there, but that's the only forum they have posting privileges. Topics autodelete after a set time unless there's a 4 or 5 star rating. Can also restrict the group type that give ratings in that forums to limit abuse.

I'm thinking that demotion is a temporary thing, and it would cut down admin upkeep compared to an elite forum. GARM should stay the good forum. We can only hope bad posters are ignorant or immature and need a little more time and experience.

I was thinking about this too. I would include a Rockets humor and a Player sightings section. With the amount of members on the site, a split could be necessary.

I don't know about everyone else, but a problem I have is that I mostly check around 3 sections in any forum. I don't roam around the other forums as much out of laziness or ADD.

Borrowing on the filter idea, instead of blowing up the GARM outright, thread creators could put a dropdown Prefixes with the topic title and eventually allow users to sort out the threads based on those prefixes.

Looks like I got BlameTracy confused with Blame Tracy, the guy who's in the chat all the time. I gave a rep either way, was deserving.

Also, Clutch, what is the significance of the green bars in comparison to what it says when you hover the mouse of the green bar?

It's bad enough that some members have monikers with weird combinations of letters (some caps and some not) and numbers that make no sense except to them, but we also have valued vets that change their monikers to something damn near incomprehensible. They know who they are! :p

Just curious... this new rating system has nothing to do with whether you start threads or not, right? It's whether people like the quality of your posts (for whatever reason). Some of us rarely start threads. I don't, unless a comet or an asteroid is reported to possibly hit the Earth 20 years from now, or next week.

    ;)

Just chiming in that this thread is very helpful in understanding some of the changes on the board this week.

    It was a good read.

I like the rep feature. I've been active on many boards that use it. It seems to weed out goofy types over time. The only place you really want goofy types is on a Disney related board. ;)
