For whatever reason I googled this guy up and read his story -- near death with anorexia to the world's #1 competitive eater...

WTF is up with that forum ?

I think it will be intersting, but would have prefered a point system rather than a graphical reference bar.

Just a straight up number over there...maybe call it Street Cred....or something like that.

RealCavsFans implements a rep system. People seemed a little to focused on it (please rep me! after each post), which takes away from it. I get negative reps for pointing out when people are wrong, even though all the facts back me up (negative points for me for pointing out that Rafer is not a good 3 point shooter...evidently everyone else is talking about another Rafer). Hopefully we develop a different culture here.

In the meantime, maybe everyone here can take a few extra seconds and start posting in the GARM again. From the threads it's easy to see which one's are worth discussing (usually 2-3 on the first page), and just get a reply here and there to lead by example. It's not going to get better if everyone here just gives up on it.

I post from time to time, and I know my replies get lost in the 10 page threads, but it's better than not contributing at all.

I like it, but I still think it should only be in effect in the GARM for a couple of reasons:

1) If this feature was GARM only, the only way to "build your rep" would be to post more in the GARM. What better way to get more vets/contributing members etc to post in the GARM? Isn't that the whole point?

2) There is way too much history between posters to avoid abuse. Too many D&D vendettas/feuds/rivalries etc. I can only imagine the beatings guys like SamFisher, Trader_Jorge, basso, bigtexx, etc will receive once the negative feedback option is rolled out. Despite what you might think of their political viewpoints, who knows what kind of GARM posters they might become if they started posting in there more often to build their "reps."

I need to post more often.

I think the craziness of the past few months, plus going back to the GARM after a year or so got to me.

excellent point.....i can probably count on one hand the number of vet posters who still show up in the GARM these days.....and that's with counting DD twice....

They post, but it can be hard to spot, sometimes. I refresh it periodically and click on the folks I know. (funny comment about DD!)

I don't really know about that. I don't post much on D&D, but I read enough to pretty much disagree with everything posted by the bolded users. But I never get annoyed by their posts in GARM or even Hangout. Although I do raise an occasional eyebrow for actually agreeing with them on something.

People who venture into D&D are generally mature enough not to take pretty revenges.

I'm glad they implemented something for rep & cred. Though I would agree with a points type system. Been on a site that was a simple +/-, positive/negative. Itd tally all the single feedbacks, so if a person was in the negative getting bashed 20 times & only credited 1 time, it'd straight show a NEGATIVE 19 by their name, that they were just pure trash.

But the Clutch Crew is better than that. Cuz there'd be GARM rooks in the -300's getting doused with forum flame in no time

I've seen stuff boil over from other forums into D&D. I wouldn't overestimate the maturity of people, regardless of age.

yeah but the GARM is different......for each of us, rockets basketball is that one placid retreat away from all the worries and heavy weighings of the world......free from political bickering, rush hour traffic, govt extortion thru inflation/taxation, military-industrial complex dominations, nagging credit card dominating girlfriends, or whatever have you.......that place is sacred ground and pure as can be......forget about the 3 turnovers - those 3:42 of flight white with the 2 feathery J's were bliss for rockets fans around the globe.....how can a man (+ hayesfan/finalsbound/Lady Di/windandsee/et al) boil over while in an utter state of bliss??

Hahah. Nicely put. I mean, I'm sure most if not all of us first came to the site because we're Rockets fans. :)

two simple steps that would make an enormous improvement:

-a "rookies" option in the ignore list (ie, all rookies would be put on ignore).
-limit the d&d to contributing members.

I like how it operates right now, but it's early. I have two questions I'd love to get people's thoughts on:

1) Do I give a reputation boost to veteran posters?
I've tried to search along for some of my favorite posters and post feedback. I think people are rewarding posters appropriately, and some longtime posters are going out and finding the veterans, but I think "out of sight, out of mind" applies.

For example, BlameTracy was a banned member a few days ago ... today he has one of the higher reputations because of this thread. It's funny and deserves positive feedback, so the system is working... but does he have a higher reputation at ClutchFans than thacabbage? Obviously no, but the system says yes by a hair.

Point being the system will boost more the reputation of those who post moving forward from this point. I'm not sure how to properly credit those who really built this place, even if they're not actively posting much or at all, but they need to be shown as having a higher reputation starting out (I think).

2) Should the ability to leave feedback be opened to regular members?
I think yes but hold off for a while. I think we will need more people with the ability to post feedback. Only positive feedback potential and maybe make going from "rookie" to "member" more strict. I don't know.

The big con though is pro-Yao posts, even if childish, could get great feedback.

I think guys who have been here and proven themselves long ago should get reputation boosts, thacabbage should have a higher reputation than Blame Tracy based on longevity, body of work, etc.

Just because that kid made 1 funny post and he does have some basketball knowledge doesn't mean he should get a boost that puts him above most of the guys who helped build this forum into what it is today.

Also, I'm fine with leaving feedback up to Contributing Members. If you want to be able to be more involved with the site, then show some support.

I'm not sure of the best way to do it, but I do agree that a boost should be given to the vets that have positively contributed to this forum over the years. Those of us who have been here for a while know who the quality posters are, but I think giving a boost to those vets would help new users identify who they should take seriously and who they should just put on ignore much easier.

Over time it will balance out, right now BT has a good high rep cause he posted a funny thread at the perfect time but will he be able to keep that level of funna up? doubtful. cabbage will easily surpass him since I rarely see a post of his that isnt good . It will just take a little time to get built up.

as for leveling up known good veteran posters who arent really active, Im ambivalent on that. If they want high rep, maybe they need to come back and participate.

I say no at this point. I think having a certain level of rep before you can give feedback would be the best way to avoid the pro-Yao rep spike phenomenon.

I agree, just give people that have been here the longest and have continued to contribute a higher starting point, they have earned that.

Nope, I think it should be limited to Contributing members only, give people more of a reason to become a contributing member, as it is an outward sign of what you get when you become one, whereas before the search feature was out of site out of mind.

I still don't like the bar as it is a nebulus symbol and raises more questions than it answers....whereas a number system is tangible and evident....but what do I know? I only make games and design UIs for a living.
