should one take up arms against this country, one should be prepared for the consequences.

neither, apparently, have certain prisoners-this report, coupled with the fact that we know the CIA sometimes gets it wrong and abducts innocent civilians should give all reason to pause and reflect.

Except that this was PLANNED torture. Of course you can stop it.

You can stop it by implementing the rules of engagement, and following the Geneva convention, and other basic international laws.

You are right. But what we are saying is that the game planning is not close to good enough.

except it's not war in any conventional sense of the word. and these proceedings are extrajudicial and ILLEGAL, which just rankles even more, because we have concrete proof that the CIA is doing illegal things-and massively screwing them up. Seriously, this ranks the CIA only one step above Banana Republic death squads, in that at least the prisoners are still alive. That isn't saying much.

    http://www.chrgj.org/docs/APPG-NYU Briefing Paper.pdf

Relevant section starts at the bottom half of page 8, under heading "How do Extraordinary Renditions violate international human rights law, IHL, and refugee laws?"

So to punish people who committed those acts, we should torture innocent civilians. That'll show those terrorists!

Also, need to note that if your only defense of America's actions, America "the bastion of freedom, democracy, and liberty" and if not that, at least signatory to most widely accepted international conventions on dignity and human rights, is to compare them with the actions of extrajudicial agents who blatantly violate international laws, and are thus rightfully regarded as the scum of the world-well, that is telling in of itself.
