Are these possible? I assume so, but I've never heard anything about any.

My finger just randomly started hurting yesterday, and today it is swollen, red and purple. It throbs and hurts when I try to do anything with it. Even unbuttoning my pants is kind of painful. It looks just like an ingrown toenail, though, so I assume that's what it is....

Has anyone ever had anything like this?

If you keep your nails clipped, this shouldn't happen. I had one years ago it hurt like a mug, The nail splintered on one side and carve into the end.

Nothing that ice and a pair of tweezers can't take care of.

I'm not about to go digging after it with a pair of tweezers. I'd do that for an ingrown toenail, but this hurts a little worse. I put some peroxide, and some black oil-like stuff that is supposed to draw out the poison or something...I don't know...that's what my mom said, but she's crazy.

It's genetic. My big toe usually grows one after I cut it, so now I cut the nail 4/5 the way through and gently pull the ingrown part along with the nail out.

    Interesting topic...

When I used to play baseball, I was actually put on the DL for a period of time with an ingrown fingernail. I was a pitcher and it hit my middle fingernail on my throwing hand. The way it happened was by clipping my nails too short, then developing an inflamed blister, which the nail then grew into. I would recommend not trimming your nails so close, or not biting them if this is the case. Same applies to toenails (hopefully trimming, not biting). These things don't go away overnight either. It takes time to work them out.

If it really gets bad, then you need to see the doctor and they will gladly cut half of your nail off for you. I had this done twice, oh by the way it is very painful.:(

yah i had this same problem and it was no fun. A week ago today i had to go see a doctor that took out all the pus from the infected areas.
Don't worry because they block off the digit (in my case the thumb) and numb it so you wont feel a thing. They hooked me up to an antibiotic IV and prescribed some more antibiotics that I have been taking for a week now. If the pain persists I would for sure have it checked out, and don't try doing it yourself... that could lead to more infections if you do not keep the area clean.

    Hope it turns out ok.

Just curious how much the medical place charged the insurance company. This sounds expensive.

For me regular doctor visit is $15 co pay. ER is 40. Cann't beat this rate. I wish the pay was this good though.

Yah I'm on my mother's Scott and White plan so I had to go out of my way to see one of their physicians so they could recommend me to a hand specialist... was a waste of time.

I recently had an ingrown toenail cut out. I REALLY should have done it sooner. Only my own stubbornness of not wanting to go to the podiatrist kept me from alleviating the pain. The procedure was quick, painless and only $20 with my insurance.

Well, I work at Eckerd, so tonight, I asked a pharmacist about an ingrown fingernail to see if she had any clue. She looked at it, and said that if it were an ingrown fingernail, it'd probably be more to the top of my finger(???), so my best guess is that it's some sort of infection. That makes sense, because it definitely set in rather quickly.
