I don't remember who or when someone mentioned them on one of the music threads in here, but Pinback is great. Thanks to whoever that was.
rob crow is in pinback and he puts out some nice solo home recorded stuff too. he's very prolific. i think he plays in about 200 bands, but pinback is my favorite (most poppy). he used to play in a band called heavy vegetable and now has a group called GOBLIN ****! if you like pinback, check out xtc (and vice-versa). i got into pinback b/c a friend of mine who knows i love xtc told me id like them. pinback sounds more like xtc's early stuff like black sea and drums and wires than the later sgt. pepper type stuff.
ahh...sufjan is the greatest. the decembrists are pretty darn amazing too. i just saw a band called ethan durelle and they were effin awesome... they're gonna be big soon. their single "televisions in the wall" is becoming pretty popular... http://www.myspace.com/ethandurelle
sorry Manny had to miss, it there was a rather large footy final on here that night, between the two local teams in the national comp, my team whooped em anyhoo off to the Mountain Goats tonight bought a few Cds last week, really in love with the new cd from the Magic Numbers and also the Okervil River release which seems to be getting raves reviews
Not much into the whole "indie" thing however I really dig spoon I have all their albums and have seen them live many times in Texas. I saw them recently in Atl at the variety playhouse and they put on a really good show the sound was good and the band was in top form.
Minus the Bear's 'Menos el Oso' came out a while ago. I think I've fallen in love with it, it's basically the only thing I have playing wherever I am.
I was thinking of getting Bloc Party, just wasnt sure what they were like, but I love Interpol and Franz Ferdinand, so I might as well get Bloc Party. Bright Eyes, I really dont like, like studogg said, to whiny of a voice, literally to me sounds like hes crying when hes singing. I havent heard of Spoon, do they sound like Interpol as well?
Manny, I have both Libertines albums. They are absolutely great, and were the shot in the arm a stale punk movement needed, but their musical medicine didn't spread far enough. I believe you said you liked the Buzzcocks which is what the Libertines remind me of a lot. They aren't copying them, but they just remind me of the Buzzcocks. Both Spoon albums are also good. Spoon always does interesting things, and have a fairly wide range. I think they are a great band. I have only heard "I'm Wide Awake its Morning" from my friend. I liked it, and I will eventually get it. It just isn't tops on my priority list right now. I think almost all Brighteyes are decent stuff. The recent more synth style was interesting and I am wondering if I like the countryish influenced stuff more or the new sound. Maybe they are the same. Smeg - The Mountain Goats are as great as they come! I had heard one song before, and only recently got the whole album. Enjoy the show.
Carl Barat and the drummer from the Libertines are forming a new group with some guy who filled in for Pete Doherty when he left and the bass player from The Cooper Temple Clause. Should be interesting to see what he comes out with. I'm not as big a fan of Babyshambles as I was the Libertines. Most of the best new Brit indie bands have been mentioned already, and I like them all(not TOO keen on Kaiser Chiefs). I'll throw some more out there for you to listen to: Hard-Fi and Maximo Park. Quintessentially British sounds. If you prefer more of a Beach Boys-esque melodyfest then The Magic Numbers are for you. For something completely different, go for Anthony and the Johnsons. I saw Bright Eyes in concert and he was as high as a kite.
I really like their sound. The lead singer reminds me of Ian Curtis. Oh yeah, another good new band are The Subways.
the libertines is certainly nice as is the new Pernice Brothers but damn really can't take the Magic numbers out of the cd player and my affection for and addictionto Sufjan - Illinoise and Michigan is getting worse PS saw the Mountain Goats last thursday, John Darnielle is a genius, eccentric but a complete genius, his performance was sensational especially considering a dodgy guitar (thanks to customs for pulling the pick-up apart looking for bombs) and his on stage banter is very witty, intelligent and humourous, and yes I have a serious 'man-crush' on him
