If we took Brown we'd probably have to give up a pick. Then we'd have to go through the summer without him around. Maybe some of his assistants who know his system could come in and run some camps but it wouldn't be the same. We'd be looking at going into next season without everything being in place yet. I don't like the sounds of that.... If we get him should we make him let somebody else coach the squad?
we won't lose him all summer but we wouldn't have him for at least some of it. Whomever takes over this team is going to have a lot of work to do this summer. There are so much to teach when taking over a team that has been playing our brand of basketball for years and years... There are of course breaks built into the summer but I'm just not happy about the idea..
Larry Brown's decision to stay or leave expected mid-week according to this ESPN article : ---------------------------------------------------- http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0525/1558963.html
here is an article just up on ESPN. says Brown is stepping down. http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0526/1559098.html
Also.....why would Larry Brown want to go to Cleveland? I mean.................he will probably quit again in 3 years. The Cavs want a longterm guy who can stick with his players for like 20 years. And why did Larry resign so quickly after Rudy stepped down? Hmm........... Rockets can deal with Larry quitting in 3 years. Our guys are a little bit older and more mature. We are VERY CLOSE to succeeding to contending.
Stephen Smith a sports writer from the Philadelphia Inquirer was on the Best Damn Sports show just now and discussed Larry Browns future. He said the the LA Clippers are the front runners to land Brown because Brown spends his offseasons in LA and his wife likes it there. He also said the Brown has a great relationship with Sterling and the one thing that Sterling would spend money on Larry Brown as a coach. He mentioned the Rockets as possibilities because of the opportunity to coach Francis and Ming. He said he doesn't think that Brown would be interested in the Cavs job. I really hope he's wrong about the Clippers.
Larry Brown on Yao Ming (at 10/25/2002) " 'SportsCenter' made fun of the kid [for perceived bad plays], and that's stupid," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "He flew in Sunday, had two practices - and both were open to the public. He made a pass [against the Spurs] I don't think I've seen two big guys who would have seen the [teammate] open. "The second I saw him in the Olympics [in Australia in 2000], I said this guy's going to be great. I couldn't believe a kid [that size who is] that athletic. His legs are developed and mature; his upper body is like [that of Sixers center Todd MacCulloch], not developed. From a distance, he looks like he's 5-10, but when he sits down, [you see] he's so huge." When the Sixers arrived at the arena, they passed a life-sized poster of Yao; several of them couldn't help but measure themselves against him. " 'SportsCenter' better get on the money and do the right plays," Brown said.
You know...if Larry Brown does go to the Clippers, HOUSTON SHOULD COMPLAIN OF TAMPERING! If he does go to the Clippers....must have been something going on secretly while he was still coach. Windandsea, thanks for the quotes! Larry Brown seems to admire Yao Ming. I think Larry would like having Yao Ming instead of Todd Macaullife or no center at all.
Count me out on Brown. We don't need an Eastern Conference mentality. I would really like to see Duleavy instead. I think that's who will end up here.
this guy seems to always be zero'd in on larry brown news. He always has something negative to say about LB. i wouldn't take his comments seriously at all.
Stephen Smith is basically a negative person. I don't think i've heard him say two nice words about anybody in a long time...
Does anyone know exactly what the NBA's anti-tampering rules are, other than requiring permission to talk to or about other teams' coaches still under contract? Whatever it is, I'm guessing Alexander skated around that as carefully, as legally as possible. I'm sure all it takes is a casual, third party to publicly ask, "Hey Larry, what do you think, would you ever consider coaching the Rockets?", and a public reply like "Of course, with the talent and management they have?" That's how Samuel L Jackson got his role in George Lucas' latest trilogy, or how Ross Perot ran for president. Rockets management was careful to say it was Rudy's decision, and Larry was as careful to say he made the decision as late as the night before, to insure themselves against any anti-tampering accusations. I think both Alexander and Brown were independently looking at this as early as mid-season - when Brown said he began to feel it was his last season w/ the Sixers, and Rudy was already publicly despairing that he didn't know what to do anymore to win a game with such a young team. Rudy's a player's coach, a veteran's coach, and Larry is well known as a developer of young talent - the writing was almost on the wall when the Rox won the lottery. As others have stated, maybe Rudy will return later... Both sides said they will take their time, and they should, at least long enough to alleviate any suspicion. Alexander also hedged himself by saying anyone would take the Rox job, (so why not Brown?) Anyway, the ball seems more in Brown's court than Alexander's who long showed his hand, but at 62, any coach with a reputation like Brown's who hasn't won an NBA championship must surely be limiting his choices to teams with that potential, and it sure ain't the Cavs or Clippers.
In this case I think we're going to be just fine. Snider is one of the really good owners in sports. He'll not make an issue of anything Houston might have said because he "wants Brown to be happy", (his words). He's not going to require compensation for Brown so there is no way he'll make an issue of premature communications...
You know...if Larry Brown does go to the Clippers, HOUSTON SHOULD COMPLAIN OF TAMPERING! If he does go to the Clippers....must have been something going on secretly while he was still coach. Of course we should complain of tampering!! Never mind the fact that Larry Brown hurried up his resignation two days after Rudy hurried up his resignation, or the fact that its well known that Les is interested in Larry. If the Clippers get him, they must have tampered. If we do, of course we didn't.
I will pick Larry Brown over Van Gundy and Leavy. Larry will bring fundamental to the team and a sense of smartness.
