Indiana teen signs 12-year extension

So much for the Brad Stevens sweepstakes.

The hottest commodity in college coaching just signed a 12-year deal to stay with national runner-up Butler. The university -- wisely -- moved very quickly in rewarding the 33-year-old coach with a new deal (no word yet on the compensation, though the school reportedly was willing to go as high as $1 million a year), with Nike-funded Oregon and Wake Forest among the potential suitors.

Of course, signing a new contract doesn't mean Stevens still will be at Butler in 12 years. But it does mean -- barring an uncharacteristically classless move of unrivaled proportions -- that he will be back next year. And that's great news for Butler fans. Not only because Stevens is a terrific young coach who's proven to be a great recruiter, but because it increases the chances that Gordon Hayward will hold off on entering the NBA draft and return to Butler for his junior year. If Stevens had left, it might have made Hayward's decision a lot easier.

So good for Butler for doing what so many mid-majors have been unable to do after a big season. And good for Stevens for realizing that the grass isn't always greener, even if the money is. He's got Butler set up to be a Gonzaga-like (or even better) perennial national player. He's in a conference in which he's almost assured 20-plus wins and an NCAA Tournament berth every year. And he's at a school he clearly loves. The pressure's low and the reward's high. No other program would offer him that combination. Only more money. Stevens chose wisely -- and so did Butler.

What were his other options?

If other teams were offering more money, I don't know that I, personally, would have stayed at Butler.

I admire Stevens, Hayward, and really all the guys on that team. What they did this year was awesome. I hope Hayward stays, Mack is also going to be there next year I believe.... Thats a strong duo right there.
