Men in India are vultures. They look at woman with no respect.

Of course, this isn't true of all men but there are a gazillion people in India so I'm assuming there are a crap ton of rapings esp in the slums.

Re: rape and misogyny in America, that's your opinion. it really depends who you surround yourself with and what media articles you choose to believe. obviously if you go to a party school like uc boulder or ucf, there's gonna be a strong culture of sexual activity through devious means and pressure to conform to that. america is still a conservative and puritan society compared to other developed nations based on a strong christian foundation, and based on the circles i've surrounded myself with, these are the kinds of self respecting people i come into contact with. You do, however, strike me as bitter and jaded with your treatment in america and project that onto this issue as a result.

I've been in Singapore for a couple weeks. I think it's the opposite of the rest of asia. Well organized, robotic, but clean and well kept.

I'm sure there's natural beauty throughout, but I value cleanliness, hygiene, and the safety of myself and my family over everything else. There are so many places to visit in parts of south America, europe and islands near Fiji that I've always preferred that setup to all the clutter, lack of privacy, in your face mentality the asian city throws at you. not to say it doesn't have it's charm, but doesn't suit my preferences.

Yeah these people people are blowing the gang raping totally out of proportion. I mean subconsciously when you book that ticket to India you WANTED to be gang raped by 10 men without running water or sewage.

    1) It isn't my opinion. It's based on years and years of evidence. This is like saying Columbus believed he'd discovered a 'New World'. No, the arrogant fool died thinking the indigenous were wrong when they kept repeating this land was NOT India for 15 years.

    2) The key word is based on the social circles you've surrounded yourself with. I've met many supposedly devout Christian and people of all faiths who have a great public image. Thanks to my job, I used to advise them on their dirty laundry i.e. fraud, adultery, sexual assaults, etc. I'd meet them later at a gala next to their loving family, clap with the rest of the audience after they'd make a superfluous speech, and hear people say delightful things about them because of their faith...

I am jaded. I see what others never see (how the sausage is made). Yet, what makes you think I'm bitter about my 'treatment'? I and most people I know have done very well by this country. We love it here. Is this the old 'if you criticize America in any way then you can leave?' In other words, if you have nothing nice to say, better to say quiet.

    3) You've hardly seen the rest of Asia so that means zilch. Not all of Asia is like Bangkok or Hong Kong. And it's strange that a *conservative, Christian who I assume is for small government and personal liberty likes Singapore. You like cleanliness, stability, and hygiene for your family. Yet, you know little, or you ignore the human rights costs and the lack of liberty under the Sing govt to achieve that Truman Show of a society.

It troubles me that you see the glittering skyscrapers and billions in GDP without hearing the bones crunch under your feet of those who were sacrificed for it all. Ask my uncle who was there during Yew and Swee's era.

    * I assume you're conservative given that thread in the D&D. It was about the Obamas, the 'black celeb thing', and that they were divisive. You claimed Michelle had hate in her heart for white people.

I shouldn't be shocked anymore, but this is terrible. These incidents are not isolated. They are probably the norm over there.

Indian Dad of Raped, Slain Teen Hung From Tree Turns Down State Money

The father of one of two girls who were gang raped and killed in rural India has turned down thousands in compensation offered to him by the state government — an unusual refusal likely to focus attention on his demands for a federal investigation into the crime.

"I don't expect justice from the state government as state police officers shielded the suspects," said Sohan Lal, a poor farm laborer in Uttar Pradesh who was offered 500,000 rupees ($8,500) by the state government.

Such government payments are common in India when poor families face high-profile calamities.

Lal told reporters Saturday that he would accept no financial assistance until the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's FBI, takes over the case, which has triggered national and international outrage.

India has a long history of tolerance for sexual violence. But the gang rape and killing of the 14- and 15-year-old girls — which was followed by TV footage showing their corpses swaying as they hung from a mango tree — caused outrage across the nation.

Also on Saturday, police arrested a third suspect in the gang rape and slaying of the two teenage cousins found hanging from a tree in northern India, as a top state official said he was recommending a federal investigation.

The three suspects detained in the attack are cousins in their 20s from an extended family, and they face murder and rape charges, crimes punishable by the death penalty, said police officer N. Malik. Two other suspects from the same village are also being sought, he said.

Facing growing criticism for a series of rapes, authorities in Uttar Pradesh, which has a long-standing reputation for lawlessness, also arrested two police officers and fired two others Friday for failing to investigate when the father of one of the teenagers reported the girls missing earlier in the week.

I'm traveled around the world quite a bit. Of course, I can't know these countries like someone who actually lives there, but in my time in India, men treated me no differently than men in the US do. It's Latin America & the Middle East where I would say (from my personal experiences), men really act like vultures around women. It's really scary sometimes :O But that's just my limited experience as a tourist. I never visited Delhi though, which I've heard is different (& much more dangerous) than most of India.

Wow. I'm usually against the death penalty, but when it already exists as a possible punishment for rape & murder (as it does in India), I would be quite upset if they did not sentenced all of these men to death. It's important men see this as something they can not do & get away with simply because they want to. Something obviously needs to change and it needs to begin with the law. Anyone see VICE?

People are hanged. Clothes are hung.

Edit: I just read online that hung is not actually wrong. So what you said is fine. It's just that more commonly people use hanged for people & hung for objects.
