sticks and stones johnnyboy... or should I say, I'll add that to the list of other things I've been called on this board. FF so was my dad. He did two tours and was in RED HORSE. I was 11 and 13 at the time. I remember being very freaked out about the whole mess.
really?! your dad's guys built those runways of metal if memory serves me I forget what RED HORSE means, but I'm sure your dad does. I'm sure it's an acronym. everything is in the military. they make up the name they want, then build the words to fit it. I was Air Force, too. crypto electronics. I did TDY duty throughout the region. Combat (hazardous duty) pay was about $55 a month then. I read the other day it is $150 now. ask him if he remembers his military ID number. now they use social security number instead, but back then we had a unique number assigned for dogtags, etc. I had a safe, albeit high pressure, job. I loved the work, loved Asia.
I love this poem by Kipling. Anyone who skimmed past it should go back and give it a read. Then think about how underpaid our people are that serve, how their families get by on that low pay and poor housing, how the veterans have to struggle to get decent treatment. It's a hell of a thing. Kipling summed a great deal of it up very well. And they're volunteers.

Deckard Yeah I have so many memories about how my mom had to really budget the family for 25 years. My dad has had two disks removed in his back, has a bullet still lodged in his skull (too close to nerves to remove) and has to wait anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to see a doctor because of the military health benefits these days. Boy! I’ve really taken this thread off track… BTW John, my dad had three children and a wife while he did his tours. So Yes, I think fathers (if it's their decision to go) shouldn't get a "pass".
yeah, that sounds about right those guys were out in harm's way all the time. in fact they were targets of snipers and such. I'm glad I didn't have to do that.
