Simple supply and demand.
Talent is always more valuable [in our society] than a Skill

I could complain that Movie tickets are up to 7 bucks . . . My cable is up to 40~50 bones WITHOUT special Channels. . .

Is this because Leo, Tom and Jim

Insideout, you're not ranting off the beaten path you're barking up the wrong tree. [IMG]

What are you trying to get at? Simply saying "It just doesn't seem right to me" is saying nothing. You better believe the NBA and its owners will keep "jacking" fans for all they can, just like Continental Airlines will jack you for arranging last minute air travel. As soon as it becomes unprofitable to do so, they will stop. Attendances at pro sports is dropping and the drop in revenue is being compensated for by corporate boxes. If you want to blame someone, blame the government for making corporate suites tax deductible! As soon as franchises performance slips, the general rule is that fans tend to stop coming(Rockets this year is a case in point). Can you blame the owners for for pursuing a more predictable and steady stream of income from corporate patrons?

It may sound un-capitalistic, but the crux is that I as a fan should have the right to watch a game where men run around putting baskets into a hoop for a reasonable price... and that basketball players, if valued on their contribution to society should not have salaries waaaay over and above professionals like doctors, teachers, and such.

I'm intrigued to know what gives you that right? If you think you have a right to watch men run around putting baskets in a hoop, go down the local street corner. I see guys doing it all the time. As far as your view on basketball player's societal value in comparison to teachers etc, well I'm afraid that is a little further than "un-capitalistic". Fact of the matter is, these "overpaid" basketball players generate an obscene amount of revenue for their owners, advertisers and their shareholders. Why else would they exist, just by abusing the fan's loyalty? Come on!

The entertainment industry isnt really overpaying its employees. If it was, all the studios would be going out of business and losing money like crazy. Leonardo Di'Caprio gets paid 20 million a movie cause he start in moveis like Titanic, whic prepubescent girls love and shell out 7 bucks to see over and over and over. Worldwide the movie makes over a billion dollars and everybody involved with the movie reaps the benefits and little girls are happy for months.

Anyway, at least with movies it only costs 7 dollars to be entertained (less if youre a student or senior citizen or make use of the matinee showings), and in the new theatres you get pretty damn comfortable stadium seating with good views and great sound systems.

Basically, it all evens out. It is cyclical. as mentioned, fans will quit attending the games in such massive numbers and ticket prices will go down (relative to where theyre at). The same can be said about actors. If Leo continues to come out with movies that little girls dont go see in such massive numbers (like his last one), you can bet your arse that he wont continue to make 20 million a movie.

blah blah blah

The premise was a seat somewhere between the end lines (sections 106-110 and 120-124 at the Compaq Center) which cost $105 for a single game ticket (official posted price). Certainly, one can tone down expectations and settle for less, if you have outstanding long distance vision or a good set of binoculars, and don't mind an occasional nosebleed from the heights. FYI, a comparable seat at other NBA arenas (sample):

Lakers - $150
Knicks - $175 (why?)
Magic - $69
Bulls - $80
Blazers - $80
Jazz - $82.50
Pacers - $30 (best buy but surely will go up)
Wizards - $85

If you want to see the best in the world perform, you will have to pay top dollar. The fact that I can see them for only $12 a game is staggering to me. Why blame the Athletes and the owners for greed? Call it greed, call it whatever you want, but if you were placed in their position I'm sure you would do exactly the same - they are merely exploiting a market opportunity.
Wouldn't exactly classify players like Pig, or Drew, et al. as "best in the world". But, hey, you're exactly right - if I were in the same position I'd do the same thing!

* Aussie Rules is a far superior game than Rugby and is the dominant sport in 5 out of 7 states [IMG]
We, and othe internationalists on the BBS ought to have a go at debating this on the BBS Hangout forum. [IMG]

In support of your argument, I would like to see more loyalty, and more control over the leagues to "keep it a sport" but I certainly don't begrudge them their mega-contracts.
Davo (and others) - believe it or not, I don't begrudge the players the salaries they're pulling down. If some fool wanted to throw money at me, regardless of my proven talent level, I'd be an even bigger fool to turn him down! The owners will eventually go belly up or lockout the players and start another league paying lower salaries. In the meantime they're betting that their franchise value will continue to rise and they will be able to make a killing ala the Jacobs brothers, who bought the Cleveland Indians for $45 million in 1986, and sold them last fall for $320 million. Not a bad R.O.I.!

My "b****" is that the average fan continues to get screwed from both sides - but if we're dumb enough to let it happen, that's our fault. That's true for sports, as well as movies, TV, any entertainment venue.

"simple supply and demand"

I don't think you can just say, oh, it's a fact of life and yadda yadda yadda and be done with it. The point is that the inflated prices should not be a given.. especially if teams like Vancouver are playing [IMG] If we are to say that fans should accept bball ticket prices and movie theater prices and so on.. then the industry will keep on jacking us for all that we're worth.. and where will that stop.. why.. even go further with Social Darwinism and say that the strongest survive.. the corporations have more power than the individual fans, so they should charge a high price as they can..

That just doesn't seem right to me.

Sorry for ranting off the beaten path.

It's kinda like "insane", but without the "s". Either way, a lot of these posts are insane and inane.
