I've always thought Born on the Fourth of July was a very underrated war movie. Say what you want about Tom Cruise, but I thought he put in an amazing performance in that flick. And I'm not a huge Oliver Stone guy, but that was by far his best movie. Even better than Platoon.
Casablanca, and in general I love WWII movies. I'd also say the Rambo movies, in particular First Blood: Part 2. Although the first two took place following the Vietnam war, the first movie was about him being a vet that came back hated, and was haunted by what he saw. The second one is saving POWs, and the third one is about the Soviets invading Afghanistan. I've never seen the 4th one.
The Alamo The Great Escape We Were Soldiers Saving Private Ryan The Patriot Gone With the Wind Braveheart 300 Ben Hur
Wow, there are many that I've never seen. It took me some time to embrace the old classic war genre, now I can't get enough of them. I loved that movie. I don't think james woods would ever play that role again though. My other central american war picks would be... Romero: Raul julia portrays the great archbishop. Under fire: It's basically 'Salvador' with an elite cast and better acting. Gene hackman is excellent in it. Innocent voices : A true tear- jerker about kids during the war, with mexican actors as salvadorans. Predator: non stop action, just wished that anna and duke would have hooked up.
Full Metal Jacket Born on the 4th of July Saving Private Ryan Pearl Harbor (i know, i'm such a girl) few more but can't think of em right now.
Apocalypse Now. Saving Private Ryan Full Metal Jacket Dr. Strangelove (cold war?) Many more. But Apocalypse Now- that's a top 10 or 15 "greatest films of all time" for a number of reasons.
agree with those above. I would also add Grave of the Fireflies probably my favorite Miyazaki film, and even though its anime it was a masterpiece IMO.
there are plenty that have been mentioned that i thoroughly enjoy, but a few that haven't been mentioned three kings 1941 crimson tide (cold war) u571 final countdown jacobs ladder downfall of hitler the counterfitters enemy at the gates red dawn
Full Metal Jacket Platoon Hamburger Hill Saving Private Ryan Apocalypse Now We Were Soldiers Those are pretty much my favorites.
One really freaky, obscure Russian/Byelorussian film that hasn't been mentioned yet: <object width="480" height="300" id="rcplay1243458314862" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,18,0"><param name="movie" value="http://cache.reelzchannel.com/assets/flash/syndicatedPlayer.swf" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"/><param name="flashvars" value="clipid=22090"><embed src="http://cache.reelzchannel.com/assets/flash/syndicatedPlayer.swf" name="rcplay1243458314862" AllowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" width="480" height="300" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" flashvars="clipid=22090"/></object><style>.syn{font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:5px;width:470px;background:#585858;border-top:1px solid #777777;color:#ccc;} .syn a {color:#ccc;}</style></div> Come and See It is very dark and disturbing. If you can handle the subtitles, I highly recomend watching it. It also is a Soviet Era film (mid 80's), so the pacing and plot structure is strange at times and very much not "Hollywood". I read that in one of the scenes where they were shooting at the protagonists, the director put real bullets in some of the guns so that the actors could get an authentic feel of the bullets whizzing past their heads!
Only one other mention for Enemy at the Gates....if you haven't seen it then do yourself a favor. We Were Soldiers is pretty excellent too.
I absolutely can't watch that movie, specifically because of the god-awful anachronistic 1960's song that they play over and over throughout the film. I can even rationalize the anachronistic "Oddball" character, but that damn song just crosses a line. crappy song || \/ <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OqSiLL8U3vo&hl=en&fs=1&start=30"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OqSiLL8U3vo&hl=en&fs=1&start=30" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> If they re-cut the film without the song, it would be a very fine film.
