Not necessarily. It is offensive to have someone assume that because you aren't from the far east, you can't tell people from different Asian countries apart. I don't doubt that people do use it to mock Asians, but at the same time it could be an effort by someone to show that he is open and interested in another culture. Going by what you are saying it is probably more often used in a negative conotation, but there might be enough of a reason to make sure before jumping down someone's throat.
what?? thats not the same thing as ni hao ma... zdratzvutiya ka delAhn is 'how are you' in russian if i said that to a russian guy...he would probably reply
in one sentence, I've just told him I see him as a drunk communist. I find it hard to believe he wouldn't be annoyed about that, especially if he was a 2nd generation stockbroker who's never had a drink his whole life (and yes I know stock brokers drink like fish, but I have met one of them who doesn't drink).
i used to take the 2 or the 5 from Flatbush. The current line I take (the N) from Brooklyn doesn't normally have these problems either unless there are high school kids on the train.
i take the N quite a lot. where do you live in the BK? oh, and i agree about loud obnoxious high school kids.
I think you overeacted. If you had seen the guy say it or the like then it'd be more understandable but if you just heard random chatter and thought you heard something and then you focused on that guy, it's out of line.
Well . . it is worse in slang. . because slang is english WHAT'S UP BRO! HOOK A BROTHER UP HOW YOU DOING DAWG!!! blah blah blah uhm . . .ok . . . all the time if i'm with a a line of what guys Hey John Hey Jeff Hey Mike WHAT UP MY DAWG OG RIVERLICIOUS!!! Rocket RIver
You answered your own question, there. You thought you heard someone who might have said something potentially offensive behind your back on a crowded subway...so you confront him and accuse him of saying it??? Next time....if you really want to confront someone about this....you turn around and ask "what did you just say?" And I never knew that was offensive. I guess I learned something today. (You could also put on your Al Pacino voice and use the ever effective....You Talkin' to me???)
I never knew that Not the kind of knowledge I seek out and Glad I know so I don't do it by mistake Rocket River
I think we have discussed this before. I couldn't care less if people made fun of my race (or gender). I really do not care. Why would I, these people do not know me, so they cannot judge me. And if the guy has some more joy in his life making fun of me, that is ok by me. I'm confident enough about the person i am that i do not mind people making fun of me. So basically i feel you overreacted. Also what did you want to achieve by confronting the guy? Because i'm sure that he : 1 doesn't feel bad about it after you confronted him. 2 If he did made fun of your race, he will not stop doing it because you confronted him. So i do not see the point in getting yourself worked up over it. That being said, If it bothered you, and you usually feel better after confronting the other person, than it is a good thing you confront people after such comments. Because it is importent that you feel good. p.s. I'm sure that people will say that i do not know anything about being made fun of because of my race, and if i had experienced it in my life i would understand why people get upset about it. That could be true. However i do not get worked up easily.
not to diffuse this situation or anything or make less of it but Where you in a Good or Bad Mood? I sometimes have to check my mood when I think I heard something or How something was said., Rocket river
I no longer get offended [back when i was younger . . ] IT is more of just . .like. . uhm. . ok I will laugh about it with my friends later Rocket River
I'm in Bay Parkway, which is probably about 4 or 5 stops form the end of the line. The high school kids are usually fine, just loud but in the past year I've already had two incidences where someone specifically tried to insult me by using a racial insult (much more explicit and obivous than this incident) at me. Both past times, it has been young high school kids. The m.o. was always the same, comments about me while they're behind my back and just before it's their train stop like "look at that effing chink, probably can't even understand what I'm saying". They normally get embarassed and shut up when I confront them. yeah I'm going to just do that from now on. BTW, I was in an extremely good mood this morning for those of you wondering
I understand & appreciate your pov. I am Greek & many times people think i'm Turkish, Arab or Italian. No harm no foul! If the only tool you have is hammer, everything looks like a nail.
A bit hypocritical. You and several others are always posting "futbol" threads on here. There's actually two ENGLISH words for that (soccer, or football), you don't know them, or what?
You way over reacted. So some kid says hello in chinese to you. Its not like he didn't give you job because you're race. Kids are stupid and adults should be mature enough to deal with it.
