Wow - I guess they feld the decert and threat of 6 times penalties bought them some leverage.

I still say a deal happens this weekend...too much for both sides to lose to let the courts decide.

One thing to note is after the union decertified a lot of the big name players hired Quinn to represent them.

Attorney Jeffrey Kessler joined the talks via speaker phone to make 51-49 proposal to league, source says. Stern, Peter Holt shot it down.

This happened several hours ago, source says. The two sides left the room, huddled and talks resumed again.

The players are clearly trying to feel out how much leverage the filing of federal suits against the NBA have gained them in the process.

Here is dilemma with system issues. If players keep no rollbacks, increase some max players to 30 pct of cap ...

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
... increase qual offers to RFAs, and keep rookie scale/minimums intact, one of two things has to happen .

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
... $ paid to players above 50 pct of BRI goes back to owners via escrow (de facto rollback), or percentage has to go up. Or some of both.

Owners dismayed by players asking for 51% BRI 2nite. Players have wanted more than 50 since disclaiming....

League source says no way deal getting done if players insist on more than 50% BRI.

As the night drags on and reports of the BRI split (again) being an issue, the optimism is quickly draining.

NBA GM: "You writers seem little loopy tonight. But not nearly as loopy as union that asks for 51% of BRI."

Players had agreed to 50-50 split. But if max stays same (up for some), rookie/min stays same, no rollbacks, how do they get to 50?

Easiest way to get owners relief without touching majority of players was always to reduce max contracts. Was never an option for players.

Have confirmed that Kessler, via speakerphone, asked for 51% tonight, as reported by Yahoo and ESPN. Step backwards in negotiations.

Thus, they've spent months trying to fit square system peg into round BRI hole. It's never going to fit.

    Good grief, really.

This is the craziest freaking, nonsensical lockout since the airlines union went on strike.

Understand basis of NBA players' new stab at 51% (owners "buy" the system issues they want). But that's unringing a bell, esp in PR game.

These labor talks are a roller coaster ride that ultimately have the same ending. An impasse.

    Chris_Broussard Chris Broussard
Owners' Labor relations committee deflated when told on conference call that players asked for 51% BRI

My sense is they are upstairs trying to make enough progress to justify coming back tomorrow. Otherwise, kaboom.

51% BRI to players, and owners get the system issues the way they want. Seems fair to me..

Re 51 pct BRI number: That has been top of owners' 49-51 band for a while. Union has said too hard to reach 51 and realistic max was 50.2.

    sheridanhoops Chris Sheridan
So they want to get realistic max closer to 51 than 50.2. Each tenth of a percent equals $4 million per year.
